Job summary

Austin Commercial in Houston, TX seeks a Project Engineer to join our Houston team on commercial construction projects. You will support project management, coordinate subcontractor schedules, submittals, and field communications to keep projects on track.

The role requires a BS in construction management or engineering, internship experience, OSHA 30-hour training, and eligibility to work in the United States. We are a 100% employee-owned company emphasizing safety, service, and integrity.

Qualifications

• Internship experience with a construction company preferred.
• OSHA 30-Hour Construction Industry Outreach Training required (may obtain within first year).

Responsibilities

• Notify subcontractors of commencement dates and coordinate delivery schedules.
• Prepare quantity take-offs and assist in submittal scheduling.
• Manage submittals, logs, transmittals, and coordination with subs, architects, and superintendents.
• Prepare reports: material logs, submittal logs, RFIs, drawings, and long-lead items.
• Verify monthly subcontractor payment requests and review supplier invoices.
• Assist locating suppliers and verify material quantities, quality, and prices.
• Respond to RFIs and route information to field personnel.
• Assist close-out documents and owner delivery packages; support warranty preparation.
• Work in Estimating on detailed cost estimates and value engineering when needed.
• Participate in jobsite safety per Safety & Health Manual.

Responsibilities

1. Notify subcontractors of commencement dates; solicit delivery schedules from suppliers and expedite deliveries to avoid costly construction delays.
2. Participate in the proposed changes process by preparing quantity take-offs.
3. Assist in preparation of the submittal schedule as required to meet construction schedule and coordinate submissions with subcontractors; assume overall responsibility for submittals, including checking for accuracy, transmittals to and from subcontractors, architects, and superintendents, and maintain logs; expedite delivery of submittals when necessary to avoid delays in construction; keep project manager abreast of submissions that will impact schedule.
4. Prepare and/or oversee preparation of a number of reports dealing with the project such as material logs, submittal logs, RFI logs, drawing logs and long‑lead items log as required by owners and/or company operating procedures.
5. Assist in the verification of monthly subcontractor payment requests.
6. May assume a role in locating suppliers for various building materials; review invoices upon request to verify quantity, quality and prices for construction materials.
7. Respond to requests for information (RFIs) from owners and subcontractors, preparing RFIs for the project architect and/or structural engineer of record when necessary to clarify technical issues concerning the project; ensure that information received in response to RFIs is routed to the applicable field superintendent and subcontractors.
8. Assist in compiling close‑out documents including as‑built drawings, guarantees, warranties, service manuals and other related documents for delivery to the owner; may prepare Austin’s warranty for inclusion in this package and assist in preparing other close‑out documents as assigned.
9. When not assigned to a project, the PE II generally is assigned to the Estimating Department, preparing detailed cost estimates; may assist with value engineering activities and the pricing of those alternate procedures; interact with a wide variety of construction professionals, including owner representatives, architects, structural engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, etc.
10. Participate in jobsite safety as outlined in company’s Safety & Health Manual.
11. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• B.S. in construction management/science, engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Internship experience with a construction company strongly preferred.
• Successful completion of OSHA 30‑Hour Construction Industry Outreach Training required (may obtain within first year of employment).
