Job summary

Austin Commercial is seeking a Field Engineer for the Phoenix, AZ Division. You will assist the senior field engineer in supervising all field-engineering activities for construction projects, including surveying services throughout all phases.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in construction management/science, engineering, or related field, or 4 years of commercial construction field engineering experience.
• OSHA 30-Hour Construction Industry Outreach Training required (may be obtained within first year).
• High level of mathematics proficiency.

Responsibilities

• Reviews contract documents before project begins and resolves discrepancies with RFIs.
• Directs dimensional control lines and elevations using owner benchmarks.
• Collaborates with surveyor, authorities, and others to locate benchmarks and property lines.
• Monitors daily field changes and coordinates field crews to support construction activities and elevations.
• Periodically monitors dimensional control of subcontracted work.
• Verifies dimensions on plans and shop drawings and issues RFIs to resolve issues.
• Provides on-the-job training in basic field engineering for subordinates.
• Maintains and safeguards engineering instruments and equipment.
• Discusses field construction problems with the superintendent and assists in supervision.
• Assesses impact of construction on adjacent properties and suggests mitigations.
• Calculates and verifies concrete quantities before pours.
• Participates in jobsite safety as outlined in Safety & Health Manual.

The purpose of this job is to assist the sr. field engineer in providing overall supervision for all field-engineering activities associated with the construction of a project, including a full range of surveying services that are carried out throughout all phases of the work.

Responsibilities

• 1.Reviews contract documents before the project begins and identifies discrepancies between the site layout plans, architectural plans, and structural plans; initiates a request for information (RFI) to the architect, directly or indirectly, seeking clarification of these dimensions
• 2.Utilizing the benchmark provided by the owner, directs a crew in establishing the dimensional control lines and elevations for the project
• 3.Works with the independent surveyor, municipal authorities, and other responsible parties to identify all benchmarks, property lines, and property corners that relate to the project site; points out the control lines and elevations established for the project; resolves any problems that arise between the initial layout and the findings of the independent surveyor
• 4.Maintains daily contact with field superintendents to stay abreast of changes in the sequence of work; organizes field crews daily to provide the field engineering support needed to support construction activities that day, including monitoring alignment of forms before concrete pours, concrete finishing to the prescribed elevation, placement of anchor bolts, structural steel, embeds openings, penetrations, etc.
• 5.Periodically monitors dimensional control of subcontracted work
• 6.Checks and verifies the accuracy of all dimensions on the plans and shop drawings; initiates RFls in a timely manner to resolve discrepancies before they can cause construction delays
• 7.Provides on-the-job training in basic field engineering subjects for subordinates
• 8.Assumes overall responsibility for the proper care, maintenance and security of all engineering instruments, tools and equipment; may perform intricate adjustments to instruments at prescribed intervals to ensure consistency in measurements
• 9.Discusses field construction problems with the superintendent on an ongoing basis, offering ideas that could lead to a solution to the problem; may assist the superintendent in day-to-day supervision of the crafts when so assigned and report uantities of work in place
• 10.Assists the superintendent in evaluating the impact of construction activity on adjacent properties, recommending courses of action to minimize risks, damage, or inconvenience to others
• 11.Calculates and verifies concrete quantities for defined pouring areas (slabs, columns, walls, etc.) before the superintendent orders concrete
• 12.Participates in jobsite safety as outlined in company's Safety & Health Manual

Requirements

• B.S. in construction management/science, engineering, or related field or, in lieu of degree, 4 years of commercial construction field engineering experience
• Successful completion of OSHA 30-Hour Construction Industry Outreach Training required (may obtain within first year of employment)
• High level of math proficiency
