Job summary

Foundation Mechanics LLC in Chicago is seeking a Project Engineer (full time) to support construction projects by coordinating documentation between the office and field teams, including submittals, RFIs, and change orders. You will work with project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, and suppliers onsite and in the office, ensuring timely, accurate records and smooth project closeouts.

A bachelor’s degree and 1–5 years of construction or coordination experience are preferred, with

  • 1-5 years experience in construction or project coordination
  • Strong organizational and documentation management skills
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Strong communication and coordination abilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and construction software platforms
  • Willingness to spend time both in the office and at project sites

Responsibilities

  • Maintain organized project files including contracts, drawings, specifications, and correspondence.
  • Track and manage project documentation including submittals, RFIs, and change orders.
  • Maintain updated drawing logs and distribute revised drawings to field teams.

  • Prepare and track submittals to owners, engineers, and architects.
  • Coordinate material approvals and shop drawing submissions.

Position: Project Engineer (Full Time & Intern Positions Available)

Reports To: Project Manager/VP

Location: Chicago, IL

Position Summary

The Project Engineer supports the successful execution of construction projects by assisting with project documentation, coordination, and communication between the office and field teams. This role helps ensure that project records, submittals, RFIs, change orders, and compliance documentation are organized and processed efficiently.

The Project Engineer works closely with project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, and suppliers while maintaining a consistent presence in both the office and field to support project progress.

Key Responsibilities
Project Documentation Management
  • Maintain organized project files including contracts, drawings, specifications, and correspondence.
  • Track and manage project documentation including submittals, RFIs, and change orders.
  • Maintain updated drawing logs and distribute revised drawings to field teams.
  • Ensure documentation is properly stored and accessible to project teams.
  • Prepare and track submittals to owners, engineers, and architects.
  • Coordinate material approvals and shop drawing submissions.
  • Track RFI responses and ensure responses are communicated to the field.
  • Maintain logs for submittals and RFIs.
Change Order Support
  • Assist project managers in preparing change order documentation.
  • Track pending and approved change orders.
  • Collect supporting documentation for pricing and approval.
Field Coordination
  • Visit project sites regularly to support project managers and superintendents.
  • Assist with verifying project progress and documentation needs.
  • Help coordinate material deliveries and subcontractor activities.
  • Ensure field teams have the most current project documents.
Project Administrative Support
  • Assist with preparing meeting agendas and meeting minutes.
  • Coordinate project correspondence between owners, engineers, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Assist with project schedule updates when required.
  • Support project managers with procurement tracking and material orders.
Compliance & Closeout Documentation

Collect and organize project closeout documents including:

  • As-built drawings
  • Operation and maintenance manuals
  • Warranties
  • Final lien waivers
  • Assist with project closeout documentation and final reporting.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience)
  • 1-5 years experience in construction or project coordination
  • Strong organizational and documentation management skills
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Strong communication and coordination abilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and construction software platforms
  • Willingness to spend time both in the office and at project sites
