Job summary

NYC Department of Environmental Protection is seeking an Assistant Civil Engineer to support Green Infrastructure design and construction. The role involves testing GI assets, conducting field inspections, and reviewing geotechnical reports and plans to ensure quality and conformance with DEP standards.

Under the supervision of the Senior Project Manager, you will use AutoCAD, GIS tools, and MS Office to analyze data, prepare reports, and support project delivery.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with 1 year of civil engineering experience, or
  • A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering technology with 3 years of experience, or
  • A bachelor’s degree plus a master’s in civil engineering.

  • Review maintenance logs, geotechnical reports, and contract plans.
  • Coordinate with project managers and maintenance operators for GI projects.

Job description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the city.

Under supervision of the Senior Project Manager of Green Infrastructure (GI) Design and Construction, Project Engineer responsibilities include asset testing of porous pavement, field inspections, contract plan review, soil subsurface analyzation, review of geotechnical reports and as-builts for green infrastructure citywide. Work will also include conducting desktop and site assessments to determine locations of green infrastructure, pre, during, and post construction site visits, performing various testing of GI assets and ensure contract progress, quality, safety, workmanship and conformance with contract documents, NYC Standards, and applicable codes.

Typical responsibilities of the Project Engineer will include:

  • Perform porous pavement asset testing and field inspections for Green Infrastructure. Prepare and submit reports.
  • Review maintenance logs for porous pavement, geotechnical reports, contract plans and as-builts.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers and porous pavement cleaning operators for maintenance.
  • Perform inspection audits to measure proper cleaning during maintenance operations as well as contractor’s performance during construction of green infrastructure projects.
  • Perform field visits during design, geotechnical investigations, construction and post construction.
  • Perform desktop analysis using AutoCAD and/or ArcGIS software to analyze tributary areas and contract area boundaries for Green Infrastructure.
  • Perform enforcement of compliance with the DEP sewer use regulations.

The Project Engineer must have strong MS Office skills, including Excel, PowerPoint, and ability to comprehend maps, graphs, and tables. Basic AutoCAD, GIS and ArcGIS knowledge is helpful for this job function.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 1. A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of fulltime satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
  • 2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering technology and three years of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
  • 3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and a master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Skills
  • Strong MS Office skills, including Excel, PowerPoint, and ability to comprehend maps, graphs, and tables.
  • Basic AutoCAD, GIS and ArcGIS knowledge is helpful for this job function.
  • Experience in green infrastructure performance as stormwater management systems, excellent communication skills and leadership skills.
  • Detailed analytical ability, experience in the planning, layout and details of site civil drawings, specifications, and field inspections.
