Job description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects public health and the environment by supplying clean drinking water, collecting and treating wastewater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP delivers more than 1.1 billion gallons per day of the highest quality drinking water to 8.5 million NYC residents and more than 1 million people in Upstate New York, and has a wastewater conveyance and treatment system capable of processing over 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater per day to protect the environment and the city's surrounding waterways.

New York City has approximately 150,000 catch basins, 114,000 hydrants, 90,000 valves, 14 gatehouses, 3 reservoirs, 68 groundwater wells, a 100 million gallon underground storage tank and 7,000 miles each of both sanitary sewers and water mains. The responsibility of maintaining these vast networks falls under the Department of Environmental Protection's Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO).

The selected candidate will serve as an Assistant Civil Engineer supporting the activities of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO), Distribution & Drainage. The position provides engineering support for the planning, evaluation, design, and implementation of stormwater management, drainage infrastructure, and sewer system improvement projects that enhance system performance, reduce flood risk, and improve community resilience.

Responsibilities include performing engineering analyses, evaluating technical data, preparing engineering calculations and technical reports, reviewing design documents, and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders. The employee will support the evaluation and design of drainage and sewer infrastructure through hydraulic and hydrologic analyses, engineering calculations and digital modeling, GIS applications, field investigations, and the preparation of technical documentation.

Assistant Civil Engineer will:
  • Perform engineering analyses and evaluations to support stormwater management and drainage infrastructure projects.
  • Collect, organize, analyze, and interpret hydraulic, hydrologic, and infrastructure-related data.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, technical memoranda, reports, drawings, exhibits, and presentations.
  • Review engineering plans, specifications, reports, calculations, and other technical documents for compliance with DEP standards and project requirements.
  • Apply hydraulic and hydrologic modeling tools, GIS applications, AutoCAD, and other engineering software to support project planning, design, and evaluation.
  • Participate in field investigations and site inspections to observe existing infrastructure conditions, collect engineering data, and support project development.
  • Coordinate with DEP bureaus, consultants, contractors, utility companies, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders to support the delivery of capital projects.
  • Maintain project documentation, prepare technical correspondence, and assist with project tracking, scheduling, and coordination activities.
  • Support the development and implementation of drainage infrastructure improvements that enhance stormwater management, reduce flood risk, and improve the resilience of New York City's drainage systems.

The position performs professional engineering work under the general supervision of senior engineering staff and provides opportunities to apply engineering principles, develop technical expertise, and contribute to the successful planning, design, and delivery of municipal stormwater and drainage infrastructure projects.
