Job summary

Primoris Renewable Energy seeks a Project Design Lead to coordinate design across multiple third parties for utility-scale solar PV facilities from Preliminary/30% through IFC drawings. You’ll ensure safe, compliant design and maintain engineering relationships with Engineers of Record and internal teams, driving value engineering and design efficiency per client requirements.

Responsibilities include leading design reviews, managing RFIs/submittals, coordinating with procurement on material

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management or related degree.
  • 5+ years of experience in design leadership, project engineering, design process management, or design execution.
  • Experience in utility-scale solar PV projects and/or renewable energy projects.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate multiple third parties to facilitate design from Preliminary/30% through IFC.
  • Ensure design meets client requirements and safety/industry codes using Engineers of Record and internal experts.
  • Provide access to constraint data from the client for design.
  • Oversee design with installation and long-term O&M considerations; consult Field Operations as needed.
  • Prepare and manage RFIs and submittals during design; ensure follow-up with appropriate parties.
  • Maintain engineering document control through IFC; manage transmittals and logs.

This person oversees maintaining professional relationships with the Engineers of Record and internal departments to facilitate the work. This person oversees seeking value‑added engineering or engineering efficiencies and carrying those applicable efficiencies out in the design process in accordance with the client’s obligations for the Project and any other requirements.

Primary Job Responsibilities
  • Manage and direct multiple third parties to facilitate all aspects of the design from [Preliminary/30%] through IFC. Review/direct the review of such design to internal subject matter experts and/or 3rd parties and ensure comments are tracked and addressed.
  • Ensure the project design meets the requirements of the client and applicable safety and industry codes and standards by utilizing the Engineers of Record, internal subject matter experts, and/or third‑party consultants.
  • Ensure the design team has access to constraints or similar data from the client as may be applicable to the project design.
  • Ensure the project design is developed with due consideration for installation means and methods and long‑term operations and maintenance of the project by others. Consult Field Operations trade specialists as necessary for requirements and recommendations.
  • Prepare and manage RFIs and submittals during the design phase of the project. Ensure RFIs and submittals are addressed accordingly with the appropriate parties.
  • Responsible for engineering document control process including client and engineering transmittals, RFI’s, and associated logs through IFC.
  • Set up and run design kick‑off meetings; coordinate site visits related to the execution of the EOR subcontract.
  • Coordinate with Procurement on the Bill of Major Materials; ensure EOR and Client approvals are received prior to ordering material; review potential quantity changes with design revisions against any procured materials.
  • Participate in the contracting process for the Project by reviewing and marking up technical exhibits and related documents and ensuring the Project's technical requirements are captured in the design and in subcontracts.
  • Develops and maintains a good working relationship with clients, Engineers of Record, subcontractors, vendors, and co‑workers to strengthen company position. Assists the management team in displaying and promoting the company values, tenets of success and culture; while representing the company in a professional manner.
  • Seek opportunities to add value to the project through the engineering design. Facilitate economic analysis/value engineering to determine cost‑effective solutions and prepare written recommendations. Ensure value engineering is incorporated into future designs.
  • Facilitate approval of major material specifications and or shop drawings to be used on the project by attaining Engineer of Record and Client or other approvals with the Procurement department.
  • Support the contracting process by reviewing and suggesting modifications to the technical exhibits of the Prime Contract.
  • Responsible for soliciting and comparing Engineer of Record quotes to support Engineering Manager with project awards.
  • Manage the contracting process (SOW, SOV, Schedule, etc.) for the Engineer of Record for the project(s) to which they are assigned.
  • Travel 0-25%
Education & Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management or related degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in design leadership, project engineering, design process management, or design execution.
  • Experience in utility‑scale solar PV projects and/or renewable energy projects
Preferred Skills/Abilities
  • Knowledge of the engineering design process.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple teams of engineers.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex tasks across multiple projects and disciplines.
  • Ability to give presentations to groups of up to 10 people.
  • Involved with and understands 2 or more disciplines (civil, electrical, mechanical, and commissioning).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail) and Visio.
  • Effective communication (oral, written, presentation), motivation, and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks.
