Project Accountant

We have an opportunity for a Project Accountant to join a construction and development company in the New York area. Reporting to the Controller, the Project Accountant manages the accounting life cycle of highly complex projects with a high level of proficiency, accuracy, and understanding of construction accounting and reporting. The ideal candidate is able to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, and is highly organized.
What you will do:
- Maintain an overall understanding of accounting procedures, general ledger, and subsidiary reports
- Understand financial sections within contract documents
- Create complex reports collaboratively with internal and external parties
- Manage multi-project accounting and reporting requirements across projects of various sizes and stages, with varying owner and agency reporting requirements
- Process project and subcontractor closeouts efficiently and accurately
- Monitor actual vs. budget reporting for project variances and provide constructive feedback and guidance
- Review ACR and budget vs. actual monthly general conditions reports for quarterly analysis
- Reconcile and properly classify project costs and billing deferrals based on project type and preconstruction agreements
- Identify areas for improvement to increase reporting accuracy and efficiency and provide potential solutions
- Create, review, and monitor project cash flow and revenue while assisting in resolving variances
- Analyze and project revenue and expenses over the lifecycle of general contracting projects
- Review and understand trade billing rate schedules when requested by the project team
- Assist with training and development of new, current, junior, and Project Accountant I-level team members
- Perform tasks independently
- Demonstrate leadership ability
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance preferred
- 6–9 years of Accounting/Finance experience
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel; Excel certification preferred
- Sage Intacct and Procore experience is a plus
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
- Strong analytical skills
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail
- Results-oriented and capable of multitasking in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to safely navigate a construction site, including climbing ladders and stairs, using job hoists, working in inclement weather conditions, and navigating hazardous, cluttered, or dark areas
$95,000–$120,000 Actual compensation will depend on factors including skill set, depth of experience, certifications, and work location.
