Socket.dev is seeking a Project Accountant to oversee the financial performance of assigned construction projects in New York. You will work with project managers, engineers, and the finance team to ensure accurate cost tracking, timely billing, and proactive financial reporting throughout the project lifecycle.

The role requires coordination across cost tracking, billing, and month-end close, with emphasis on accuracy, compliance, and timely information for decision makers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 3+ years of accounting experience in construction preferred.
  • Familiarity with GAAP and WIP accounting practices.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and track project budgets, costs, commitments, and forecasts.
  • Prepare monthly job cost reports and analyze project financial performance.
  • Review and process subcontractor invoices, change orders, and purchase orders.
  • Prepare and submit client billings in accordance with contract terms (AIA formats, cost-plus, T&M).
  • Assist in revenue recognition and prepare monthly accruals and journal entries.
  • Reconcile project-related accounts and assist with month-end closing.

Job description

The Project Accountant will be responsible for overseeing the financial performance of assigned construction projects. This role works closely with project managers, engineers, and the finance department to ensure accurate cost tracking, timely billing, compliance with contract terms, and proactive financial reporting throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and track project budgets, costs, commitments, and forecasts.
  • Prepare monthly job cost reports and analyze project financial performance.
  • Collaborate with project managers to review cost-to-complete projections.
  • Ensure all costs are accurately recorded to the correct job and cost code.
  • Review and process subcontractor invoices, change orders, and purchase orders.
  • Prepare and submit client billings in accordance with contract terms (AIA formats, cost-plus, T&M, etc.).
  • Assist in revenue recognition and prepare monthly accruals and journal entries.
  • Reconcile project-related accounts and assist with month-end closing.
  • Track lien waivers, insurance certificates, and compliance documents.
  • Support internal and external audits with project-related documentation.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and report potential financial risks.
  • Retainage — tracking, billing, and release on both the receivable and payable sides
  • AIA G702/G703 pencil requisitions and owner requisition approval cycles (lien waiver collection is already covered)
  • Certified payroll and prevailing wage reporting, if we're performing public or NYS-funded work
  • Subcontractor onboarding — W-9s, 1099 tracking, and insurance compliance
  • Sales tax treatment on materials and capital improvement certificates (NY ST-124)
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 3+ years of accounting experience in the construction industry preferred.
  • Familiarity with construction accounting standards and practices (GAAP, WIP, etc.).
Technical Skills:
  • Proficient in construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, Procore, CMiC, etc.).
  • Advanced Excel skills and comfort with financial reporting tools.
  • Strong understanding of project cost accounting and billing processes.
Soft Skills:
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines.
  • Problem-solving mindset with a proactive approach.

Salary: $70k - $95k, based on experience
