Job description

The Programs & Events Intern will support the External Affairs Team across a wide range of initiatives related to the planning and execution of Global Ties U.S. programs and events. These include signature gatherings for our member organizations—such as the National Meeting, Diplomacy Begins Here Regional Summits, and the National Programmers Workshop—as well as externally facing events and partnership campaigns.

This role is ideal for someone with strong project management skills who thrives in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment. The ability to multitask, prioritize assignments, and adapt to shifting needs is key. Candidates should be comfortable using (or eager to learn) tools like project management platforms, event planning software, and marketing automation systems for email campaigns.

Through this internship, we aim to support individuals pursuing careers in event planning, program management, or international exchange and nonprofit leadership—offering hands-on experience in a mission-driven organization.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Assisting with event site buildout and registration management
  • Building project planning timelines, action lists, and run of shows

Preferred Skills & Interests:
  • Familiarity with productivity tools like Microsoft Office, Google Drive, and virtual meeting platforms (e.g. Zoom Webinars)
  • Experience with event or project management platforms such as Basecamp or Cvent
  • Interest in public diplomacy, nonprofit operations, or international education
  • Candidates open to extending their internship from Fall into Spring are especially encouraged to apply
  • Learning opportunities to engage with the U.S. Department of State and other international exchange partners
  • Mentorship from Global Ties U.S. staff
  • $3,000 stipend (per semester)
  • Academic credit and ability to meet other academic program requests
  • Well-rounded experience in all aspects of event planning and external affairs work
  • Fall/Spring Semester: Preference given to candidates based in the Washington, DC area who can join in a hybrid or in-person format
  • Summer Semester: More flexibility available for remote participation
  • Occasional need to come into the office outside of traditional in-office days for event-related activities
  • Office location: Washington, DC
  • Global Ties U.S. operate on Windows OS (Windows 10+). Interns must use their own Windows-compatible devices for both in-office and remote work
