Qualifications

Position Overview:

Henry Street’s Meals on Wheels (Healthy Senior Select) program delivers fresh and frozen meals to over 1,300 homebound seniors in Manhattan daily, supporting their health and independence at home and in their communities. We seek a motivated, capable leader to oversee the program, ensuring timely meal delivery, managing a diverse staff, and providing clear guidance. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong organizational skills, good judgment, and dedication to serving the aging population. This leadership role requires effective teamwork with staff and external partners, maintaining high standards of service and safety.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily operations of the Meals on Wheels program to ensure meals are delivered on time, safely, and accurately.
  • Supervise, train, schedule, and assess delivery staff: track attendance, performance, field activities, and staffing coverage.
  • Assign routes daily, manage coverage plans for callouts, staffing gaps, vehicle problems, and service interruptions.
  • Check route sheets, meal orders, service updates, and delivery records for accuracy and address discrepancies.
  • Track program performance, service quality, and data for accurate reporting to NYC Aging/DFTA, City meals on Wheels (CMOW), and Henry Street Settlement.
  • Keep readiness for audits, assessments, and inspections by maintaining current, organized program records, logs, certifications, and documentation.
  • Manage the fleet, including vehicle cleanliness, safety checks, maintenance, inspections, registrations, insurance, mileage logs, and other documents.
  • Conduct monitoring of delivery staff, vehicles, meal vendors, and operations, completing relevant reports.
  • Ensure compliance with NYC Aging/DFTA, CMOW, Henry Street Settlement, food safety standards, and Meals on Wheels policies.
  • Oversee meal vendors, quality, food temperatures, supplies, delivery tools, and other food service essentials.
  • Address participant complaints, service issues, incidents, and emergencies: document, follow up, and elevate as needed.
  • Anticipate operational challenges and develop solutions to keep services uninterrupted.
  • Communicate professionally and promptly with staff, participants, families, case managers, vendors, subcontractors, funders, and community partners.
  • Attend meetings with providers, subcontractors, advisors, and internal teams: follow up on action items.
  • Support referrals and linkages between Meals on Wheels clients and other Older Adult Services and community resources.
  • Step in with route and operational duties as needed and cover for the Program Director during their absence.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Program Director.
Essential Physical Job Functions
  • Must be able to deliver when needed.
  • Must be able to assist in delivery walk-up at least 5 flights of stairs, lift 40 lbs.
  • Ability to work onsite in the Lower East Side and travel around all 5 NYC boroughs.
Requirements
  • Must Have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of two years of supervisory or management experience, preferably supervising a team of 15 or more employees.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, supervise, motivate, and hold a diverse team accountable.
  • Strong organizational, planning, prioritization, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and ability to make independent decisions in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Experience with compliance monitoring, assessments, audits, or government-funded programs preferred.
  • Ability to manage staffing coverage and respond effectively to operational challenges and service disruptions.
  • Strong conflict-resolution skills with the ability to address employee concerns professionally, respectfully, and consistently.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative and team-oriented work environment that values diverse perspectives.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to ensure accuracy of operational records and documentation.
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record required.
  • Food Protection Certificate/Food Handler's License required, or ability to obtain within the first three months of employment.
