Base pay range

$60,889.00/yr - $70,022.00/yr

The Division of Disease Control's mission is to safeguard the health of New Yorkers through identification, surveillance, treatment, control, and prevention of infectious diseases, which is achieved through varied and interrelated endeavors of its seven Bureaus. The Bureau of Communicable Disease (BCD) monitors and analyzes trends in disease data and provides consultation to the medical community and the public on the recognition, prevention, and control of communicable diseases. BCD is responsible for the surveillance, prevention, and control of over 70 infectious diseases including foodborne, enteric, waterborne, respiratory (including COVID-19), zoonotic, and vector-borne diseases.

Position Summary: Reporting to the Supervisor and working with the Community Engagement and Health Education (COHE) Unit which provides health educational materials and outreach to the community to support them in reducing the risk of disease transmission of infectious diseases or conditions. The unit works closely with BCD units, various partners across the Health Department and other city agencies to respond to infectious disease issues promptly and effectively. The program coordinator will lead planning of all outreach and health education activities, tracking and reporting program metrics and production, development and maintenance of health education materials.

Duties Will Include But Not Be Limited To

  • Manage health education priorities within the bureau to plan, coordinate and monitor community outreach initiatives related to infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, flu, RSV, malaria, hepatitis A, legionella and others.
  • Organize and facilitate outreach initiatives within the community to address disparities in health access and information, focusing on underserved populations.
  • Assist in the monitoring and maintaining of critical health educational materials, inventory control and ordering processes for health education materials such as side decks, training activities, handouts, lesson plans and resources to support community outreach and ensure they incorporate a racial equity lens.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues within DOHMH, and external partners, to align and enhance health education initiatives.
  • Track and evaluate outreach and education data to prepare comprehensive reports highlighting the impact of community outreach programs on health equity and infectious disease control.
  • Attend and present at meetings with internal and external stakeholders to support Community Engagement and Health Education activities.
  • Support seasonal staff and interns during peak outbreak activities.
  • Participate in the Incident Command System to support emergency response activities as needed.
  • Work on special projects as needed.

COMMUNITY COORDINATOR - 56058

Minimum Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
