Job summary

Central State University is seeking a Technical/ Program Assistant (Part-Time) to support the NRCS Advancing Markets for Producers project across statewide operations. You will help with field implementation, sample collection, data management, and outreach under team guidance.

The role requires strong communication, independent work, and flexibility to travel within the state. Entry into the position is contingent on funding through Oct 31, 2028 and a background check.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in agriculture, horticulture, environmentalscience, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to work with both urban and rural farmers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and flexible schedule (some evenings/weekends).
  • Experience with field data collection or project support is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Distribute, track, and manage project supplies and equipment.

Job Summary/Basic Function

Job Summary:

Technical/ Program Assistant is a grant-funded position supportingthe NRCS Advancing Markets for Producers ( AMP ) project. Thisposition will help with implementing vegetable production systemswith the cooperating farmers, assist with the measurements,monitoring, verification. Core responsibilities include supportingfield operations, collecting and processing samples, datacollection and management, engaging with producers, andcontributing to basic outreach and marketing activities under teamguidance. This position requires strong communication skills, theability to work independently, and the ability to interacteffectively with both rural and urban farmers. Statewide travel isrequired.

This position is expected to continue through October 31, 2028,contingent upon annual review and federal funding renewal.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Field Implementation, Sampling, and Data Management
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining farmer field studies anddemonstration plots, including layout, tagging, signage, mapping,planting, scouting, and other field operations following projectprotocols.
  • Support in collecting and processing soil, plant, and manuresamples; recording field measurements; maintaining data logs; andsummarizing field activities for internal reporting.
  • Help distribute, track, and manage project supplies, materials,and equipment.
Producer Support and Outreach
  • Support producer engagement activities, including field days,demonstrations, trainings, and cohort meetings.
  • Provide basic on-site technical assistance to farmers anddocument production practices as needed.
  • Assist with simple outreach materials—photos, short write-ups,flyers—and help gather marketing-related information, such as saleslogs and buyer contacts.
Teamwork, Coordination, and Safety
  • Collaborate with the Nutrient Management Specialist andCoordinator, and Extension Educator to achieve projectobjectives.
  • Work with and help guide student assistants during field andlab activities.
  • Follow all safety procedures and maintain professionalcommunication with farmers, colleagues, and partners.
  • Perform additional duties as needed to support AMP projectactivities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree in agriculture, horticulture, environmentalscience, or a related field; or equivalent hands-on orspecialty-crop agricultural experience.
  • Ability to work effectively with both urban and ruralfarmers.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time well, and assistwith supervision of student workers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable insured vehicle, andwillingness to work a flexible schedule (someevenings/weekends).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, horticulture, agronomy, or arelated field.
  • Experience in crop production, plant nutrients, irrigation,pest management, or marketing support.
  • Experience working with small‑scale vegetable and row‑cropproducers.
  • Familiarity with NRCS conservation practices and agriculturalprograms.
  • Experience in extension, applied research, or community-basedagricultural programs.
