Job summary

Rochester Art Center is seeking a Program Assistant to join a small, thoughtful team. This part-time, non-exempt role offers 25-30 hours weekly with an starting wage of $18 per hour and a flexible schedule.

You will work closely with the Program Director to ensure engaging programming and enriching educational experiences. The position requires coordinating workshops, classes, and events, with on-site and off-site support as needed.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or similar experience
  • Experience in education, museums, art services or related work preferred
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Program Director to coordinate, staff, and support the successful delivery of Art Center programs.
  • Help facilitate, set up, and strike public and private workshops, classes, artist talks, and virtual programs.
  • Foster a welcoming environment and a sense of belonging for all Art Center visitors, staff, volunteers, teaching artists, and program participants.
  • Prepare program spaces, materials, and supplies and help keep classroom studios organized, stocked, and ready for use.
  • Assist with programs and events both on and off site as needed.

Rochester Art Center is excited to welcome a Program Assistant to our small, thoughtful, but mighty team! Our staff enjoy a flexible schedule and work environment that depends on accountability and demonstrable results.

The Program Assistant works closely with the Program Director to ensure successful programming and enriching educational experiences at Rochester Art Center.

Program Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the Program Director to coordinate, staff, and support the successful delivery of Art Center programs.
  • Help facilitate, set up, and strike public and private workshops, classes, artist talks, and virtual programs.
  • Foster a welcoming environment and a sense of belonging for all Art Center visitors, staff, volunteers, teaching artists, and program participants.
  • Prepare program spaces, materials, and supplies and help keep classroom studios organized, stocked, and ready for use.
  • Assist with programs and events both on and off site as needed.
Creative Studio

This program runs from September through May, Fridays & Saturdays, 11 am - 4 pm.

  • Develop hands-on art projects for Creative Studio that connect to exhibitions on view at Rochester Art Center.
  • Create examples and instructional materials to support Creative Studio projects.
  • Refresh project ideas regularly to encourage repeat visitors and provide new creative experiences.
  • Cover Creative Studio shifts as needed.
  • Support and assist volunteers working in Creative Studio.
  • Organize, replenish, and tidy Creative Studio materials and workspaces.
Total Arts Day Camp

This program runs from June through August, Monday - Friday, 9 am - 3 pm.

  • Work with youth ages 5 - 12 during Total Arts Day Camp.
  • Support a positive, inclusive, and creative environment for campers.
  • Assist with art activities, classroom routines, materials, and daily program needs.
  • Support and assist volunteers helping with Total Arts Day Camp.
Marketing & Promotion
  • Assist with the design and monthly distribution of flyers promoting Rochester Art Center programs and events.
  • Help distribute promotional materials to schools, community organizations, and other facilities.
General Responsibilities
  • Secure the building and ensure proper building security when responsible for closing.
  • Follow policies and stay informed about updates.
  • Assist other departments with programs, events, and projects that support the Rochester Art Center's overall mission.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or similar experience
  • Experience in education, museums, art services or related work preferred
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and artists, and communicate both orally and in writing in English in a timely manner
  • Proficiency in additional languages is appreciated, but not required
  • Can work in a fast-paced environment, analyze situations, and respond quickly to deliver effective solutions
  • Comfortable lifting up to 40 lbs in order to move or organize art supplies and set-up/strike studio classrooms as needed
  • Basic understanding of audio/video equipment, with the ability to learn new skills
  • Able to maintain accurate records, write reports, business correspondence, and procedural guides; effectively present information and respond to questions from colleagues and the general public
Physical and Environmental Requirements of the Position

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend, sit, move about, hear and speak. Noise level may be high when the museum is installing or deinstalling artwork. Required to stand, be on feet, and move around for a full work shift.

Ability to communicate in person, by radio, electronically and over the phone. Ability to use computer equipment to complete reports, correspondence, maintain inventories, etc.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities of Rochester Art Center employees, but will regularly oversee volunteers and interns.
