Job summary

Vincennes University seeks a Professional Tutor/Mentor to support academic, life skills, and non-cognitive strategies for program participants. The role helps improve retention and graduation through guided learning, modeling, role-playing, and self-regulation within Blazers Achieve Student Support Services.

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree with Master’s preferred, strong communication, and the ability to work with underrepresented populations.

Primary Function:To facilitate academic, life skills, and non-cognitive (i.e., executive function, study, and social skills) strategies that will enhance the progress of the program participants’ retention and graduation through strategies guided learning, modeling, role-playing, and self-regulation.

The Professional Tutor/Mentor will perform duties related to the operations of Blazers Achieve Student Support Services.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Works as a collaborative team member.
  • Possesses good oral and written communication skills.
  • Maintains FERPA.
  • Reports to the Student Support Services Director.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Provides educational services to, mentors, and coaches underrepresented populations ( i.e., diverse cultural, ethnic, first generation, economic background, students with disabilities)
  • Demonstrates competency in tutoring subjects including non-cognitive strategies (i.e., executive function skills, study strategies, and social skills)
  • Documents the tutoring session, including non-cognitive skills, in the student’s recording sheets and database
  • Respects students’ views
  • Establishes a professional environment for open interaction and reflection
  • Encourages independent behavior but invests sufficient time in working with students
  • Utilizes careful probing to assess readiness of students to accept and benefit from different points of view

Provides educational services to underrepresented population (i.e., diverse cultural, ethnic, economical background, students with disabilities, etc.).

Ability to maintain confidential information.

Education, Experience, Licensure:

Bachelor’s degree in business, education, social work, or related field required, Master’s preferred.

Ability to work with underrepresented populations (e.g., diverse cultural, ethnic, and economical background, students with disabilities) required.

Physical Demands:

Normal physical demands for successful work in a normal office environment. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods. Ability to utilize hands for general office work including typing, filing, answering telephones, and writing.
