Job summary

The City of Fort Worth is seeking a Professional Engineer to design and implement traffic signal timing plans, retiming corridors, and support major transportation projects. This role requires a Texas PE license and strong civil engineering background, with hands-on experience in signalized infrastructure.

Work includes collaboration with consultants, vendors, and city stakeholders, plus potential for remote/hybrid work.

Qualifications

• Requires Bachelor's degree in engineering and PE certification in Texas.
• Minimum 4 years civil engineering experience, including 2 in the assigned area.
• Texas drivers license required; if licensed elsewhere, must obtain Texas registration within 6 months.

Responsibilities

• Retiming corridors and developing signal timing plans for synchronized systems citywide.
• Installation and/or modification of traffic signals and related activities.
• Provide technical support for transportation projects using latest design/drafting software.
• Responding to citizen and vendor requests as assigned.
• Mentoring junior engineers and assisting Senior Engineers with projects/contracts.
• Traffic data collection and conducting traffic studies.
• Communicate clearly with consultants, stakeholders, and citizens.

Pay Range: $78,326 - $101,824 annual compensation

Sign-On Incentive: $5,000 Sign-On Incentive: 50% paid on the completion of first pay period, 50% paid after 6 months of employment. ***

Workdays & Hours: Monday – Friday 8 am – 5 pm; Some evening/weekend work required. After just six months, enjoy the freedom of 3 days of remote work each week or hybrid schedule! Subject to business needs (with department approval)

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university with major coursework in mathematical, physical, or engineering science
• Four (4) years of increasingly responsible civil engineering experience, including two (2) years in the assigned area of responsibility
• Possession of registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Texas. If licensed in another state, continued employment will be contingent upon obtaining registration as a Professional Engineer within the State of Texas within six (6) months of employment
• Valid Texas driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

• Retiming signalized corridors
• Design and review of traffic signal plans and specifications
• Knowledge of the latest versions of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD), Highway Capacity Manual (TRB HCM 2010), AASHTO Manual for Geometric Designs of Highways and Streets
• Experience with AutoCAD, SYNCHRO, and Highway Capacity Software (HCS)
• Traffic studies experience
• Community meeting experience

The Professional Engineer's Job Responsibilities Include

• Retiming corridors, developing and implementing signal timing plans for synchronized systems throughout the city
• Installation and/or modification of traffic signals and other traffic-related activities
• Provide technical support to plan, design, and implement transportation projects; reviewing, designing, and implementing traffic signal projects using the latest available design and drafting software
• Responding to citizens and vendor requests (as assigned)
• Mentoring junior engineers or techs and assisting Senior Engineers with traffic signal projects/contracts
• Traffic data collection and conducting traffic studies
• Ability to interact and communicate concisely and accurately both orally and in writing with consultants, stakeholders, and citizens
