Sonoco Recycling has openings for a Production Worker I. This hourly position is responsible to the Production Lead and Plant Manager.

The main duties of this job involve the safe and efficient unloading, processing, and storing of incoming recovered scrap material, the maintenance of the related equipment, and general housekeeping of the yard and plant production areas. Must have the ability to manually push, pull, and lift some equipment and materials as needed. In all instances that a mechanical means is possible, it is done in this manner, but some manual exertion is still required. Teamwork and cooperation are critical to the success of our mill.

What you will be doing:

1. Inspect the work areas and all equipment at the first of every shift to determine safety concerns and needs for maintenance, housekeeping, and supplies for the shift. 5S standards apply.

2. Inspects and verifies grade and quality of incoming material.

3. Tagging, weighing, and storing materials in the proper place/area.

4. Unload scrap material from enclosed trailers and flatbeds using forklifts.

5. Safe and efficient operation of the baler - will train.

6. Sorting/Grading items to type for baling.

7. Responsible for maintaining baler production reports and daily forklift inspection reports.

  • Inspect the work area and all equipment at the first of every shift to determine safety concerns and needs for maintenance, housekeeping, and supplies for the shift. Review any concerns with the Lead person or Production management.
  • Inspects and verifies the grade and quality of incoming material.
  • Tagging, weighing, and storing materials in the proper place/area.
  • Notify Supervision if the material is substandard for any reason.
  • Unload scrap material from enclosed trailers and flatbeds using a fork truck or electric pallet jack. Refer to Corp. Safety & Health Policy# 7 .22 for proper truck/trailer lockout procedures
  • Safe and efficient operation of the baler unit assigned.
  • Operate and maintain the baling equipment for all grades.
  • Responsible for and monitoring the automatic cycling of the baler to produce maximum-density bales.
  • All boxes of material must be checked for contamination before being emptied into the loose scrap bins or baler.
  • Assists in collecting materials from various collection points using lift trucks and/or hand carts.
  • Sorting/Grading items to type for baling
  • Responsible for maintaining baler production reports.
  • Handle bales carefully to prevent breakage.
  • Safe and efficient operation of a Fork Truck for use in handling bales, boxes, racks, bins, equipment, scrap rolls, etc. from one area of the plant to another. This also involves driving in the wastepaper area among other vehicles. Must be licensed by Sonoco or the designated agent.
  • Performs routine service and care of fork trucks. Documents inspections.
  • Loading and unloading trucks.
  • Spotting trailers for loading or unloading.
  • Prepares carriers for shipping wastepaper & other materials.
  • Matches bill-of-laden with correct trailer (weight in & out) and records weights in office.
  • Maintain proper housekeeping around the baler, plant areas, and loading dock daily.
  • Performs repair work and/or welding to the extent of knowledge to perform repair functions safely.
  • Filling vacancies during absences.
  • Perform other tasks or duties as assigned that relate to the safety, housekeeping, or operation of the plant.
