Position Purpose

The Production Space and Cage Manager supports Film &Media Studies courses involving digital cinema, film, sound, andother time-based media. The manager oversees the equipment cage anddepartmental production spaces, supports faculty and students incarrying out curricular and production goals, maintains productionequipment and facilities, supervises student employees, anddevelops safe and consistent studio workflows and best practices.The position also supports the department’s expansion of larger,collaborative studio productions and works with campus partners onproduction facilities, technical systems, and shared mediaresources.

Description

The Production Space and Cage Manager supports Film & MediaStudies courses involving digital cinema, film, sound, and othertime-based media. The manager oversees the department’s equipmentcage and production spaces; maintains production equipment andfacilities; hires, trains, schedules, and supervises studentemployees; and provides hands-on technical support to faculty andstudents. The position plays a central role in expandingstudio-based and larger team productions, developing safeproduction and set-building practices, and creating consistentworkflows and best practices for departmental productionspaces.

Bachelors plus 3-5 years' experience or equivalent combination ofeducation and experience

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in film, media production, television,broadcast, digital media, or a related field, or an equivalentcombination of education and professional experience.
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experiencein film/media production, studio operations, equipment management,or academic media services.
  • Demonstrated experience hiring, training, scheduling,supervising, and evaluating student employees.
  • Experience supporting studio and soundstage operations, setbuilding, production safety, and larger team-based filmproductions.
  • Demonstrated experience managing an equipment checkoutoperation, including reservations, circulation, inventory control,preventative maintenance, and repair coordination.
Required Qualifications – Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Strong working knowledge of digital cinema cameras, lenses,lighting, grip, field sound, and studio-production equipment.
  • Ability to teach technical workshops and provide hands-onsupport to students and faculty.
  • Strong organizational, communication, customer-service, andproject-management skills.
  • Ability to develop clear procedures, documentation, andproduction best practices.
  • Ability to establish clear expectations, assign work, provideongoing feedback, and manage student staffing in support ofequipment-cage operations, production spaces, and departmentalactivities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • MFA or other advanced degree in film, media production, or arelated field.
  • Experience working in higher education and supportingcurricular production.
  • Experience with 16mm film cameras and workflows, studiolighting and DMX control, set construction and soundstageoperations, and professional digital cinema workflows.
  • Experience producing or supporting larger collaborative filmproductions.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator,After Effects, InDesign, Audition, and other current production andpost-production tools.

Equipment Cage Operations
  • Manage equipment checkout and reservations, inventory control,equipment readiness, preventative maintenance, repair coordination,and student employee operations.
Production Spaces and Studio Operations

Technical Planning and Collaboration
  • Collaborate with Film & Media Studies faculty, technicalstaff, and campus partners on equipment planning, productionsystems, facilities, shared resources, and implementation of newproduction technologies.
