Job summary

Boxcar Coffee Roasters in Boulder, CO seeks a Production Lead to oversee our roastery operations, drive workflow and systems, and serve as shift lead when Head Roaster is away.

This role is about 75% production/fulfillment and 25% administrative, with hands-on roasting on vintage Probat roasters, daily QC/QA, and guiding a small team to maintain clean, efficient processes and on-time delivery.

Responsibilities

• Own the daily flow of the roastery from order intake to final delivery, planning and scheduling roasting and fulfillment based on demand.
• Work hands-on in production daily, including roasting on vintage Probat roasters to Boxcar's quality standards.
• Identify friction points, waste, and inefficiencies; develop, document, and implement improvements to roastery systems, processes, and layout.
• Keep the roastery clean and organized to support efficient work.
• Manage inventory by sourcing and ordering cost-effective supplies and merchandise.
• Bring updates and ideas to weekly meetings with the Green Buyer, including what's working and proposed solutions.
• Participate in daily QC/QA cuppings, assist with sample organization.
• Serve as the day-to-day leader and point person for the team, keeping the day on schedule and delegating efficiently.
• Act as shift lead in the absence of the Head Roaster.
• Train the team on, and cover as needed, preventative equipment maintenance, wholesale delivery routes, and cold brew production.
• Create and maintain clear procedures so training is consistent and the team can work independently.
• Take on other tasks and responsibilities as needed within the scope of the department.

Position Overview

The Production Lead exemplifies Boxcar Coffee Roasters’ high standards for quality, efficiency, and hospitality, while continuously driving improvements to our roastery systems. The Production Lead owns Boxcar’s production system, from fielding orders to final delivery, maintains a clean and organized Roastery, and acts as shift lead in the absence of the Head Roaster. This role is approximately 75% production/fulfillment and 25% administrative/office.

Key Responsibilities

Drive Workflow and Systems

• Own the daily flow of the roastery from order intake to final delivery, planning and scheduling roasting and fulfillment based on current and projected demand
• Work hands-on in production every day, including roasting on our vintage Probat roasters to Boxcar's quality standards
• Identify friction points, waste, and inefficiencies as you work, then develop, document, and implement improvements to roastery systems, processes, and layout
• Keep the roastery clean and organized to support efficient work
• Manage inventory by sourcing and ordering cost-effective supplies and merchandise
• Bring updates and ideas to weekly meetings with the Green Buyer, including what's working, what's not, and proposed solutions
• Participate in daily QC/QA cuppings, assist with sample organization

Lead the Production Team

• Serve as the day-to-day leader and point person for the team, keeping the day on schedule, delegating efficiently, and offering "pro tips" along the way
• Act as shift lead in the absence of the Head Roaster
• Train the team on, and cover as needed, preventative equipment maintenance, wholesale delivery routes, and cold brew production
• Create and maintain clear procedures so training is consistent and the team can work independently
• Take on other tasks and responsibilities as needed within the scope of the department

Compensation

• Hourly $26.00
• Health insurance options with 75% employer contribution
