Job summary

First American, a long‑standing leader in title insurance and real estate services, is seeking a Product Underwriting Counsel to bridge legal and product teams. You will shape underwriting protocols for technology features, translate real estate concepts for product and underwriting teams, and contribute to product strategy and risk management.

You will bring a law degree, 3+ years of title underwriting or related experience, and strong communication and analytical skills to influence product

Qualifications

• Law degree is required and admission to practice law in the appropriate jurisdiction.
• At least three years of direct title insurance underwriting, title counsel, or real estate conveyancing experience.
• Ability to apply underwriting judgement in technology, product, automation, or AI-enabled environments.
• Strong verbal and visual communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
• Strong understanding of land titles, real estate law, and conveyancing processes.
• Solid understanding of federal and state laws related to title insurance and settlement services.
• Some technical aptitude, e.g., familiarity with at least one software engineering language.
• Business acumen and strategic agility to influence outcomes and resource negotiations.

Responsibilities

• Identify, evaluate, and manage title insurance risk for a technology feature or product line.
• Execute underwriting vision and strategy for a technology feature or product line.
• Participate in planning meetings and product strategy discussions.
• Assess market competition and identify gaps, threats, and advantages.
• Provide underwriting and real estate expertise to product managers, designers, researchers, and engineers.
• Translate complex real estate concepts into actionable ideas for the product team.
• Translate technology concepts into clear ideas for transaction underwriters and underwriting protocol.
• Execute tasks on the product roadmap and influence product evolution.
• Support the product development team with prioritized requirements.
