Hai Robotics is seeking an experienced Product Safety Engineer to join our Global Safety Team. This global role is responsible for ensuring that Hai Robotics’ warehouse robotics and automation solutions comply with applicable product safety, machinery safety, electrical, and functional safety requirements throughout the product lifecycle.
The Product Safety Engineer will collaborate with Product, Engineering, Sales, Solutions, Delivery, and Customer teams to translate complex regulatory requirements into practical product specifications and system-level safety solutions. This position will also conduct compliance audits, lead risk assessments, develop mitigation strategies, and help customers understand applicable machinery and automation safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory Compliance and Standards
- Analyze customer and project compliance requirements in accordance with applicable ANSI, ISO, IEC, OSHA, NFPA,Machinery Regulation,UL, and regional regulatory standards.
- Conduct regulatory compliance audits of warehouse robotics and automation systems in accordance with NFPA 79, UL 508A, ANSI B11.0, and other applicable standards.
- Translate regulatory and harmonized standards—including ISO 12100, IEC 62061, IEC 60204-1, and ISO 13849-1—into technical specifications, engineering requirements, and product safety criteria.
- Monitor changes to global machinery safety regulations and standards, evaluate their potential impact, and recommend updates to products, processes, and documentation.
- Support product certification activities involving testing laboratories, notified bodies, certification organizations, and regulatory authorities.
Risk Assessment and Mitigation
- Implement Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) methodologies throughout the product lifecycle, including design, development, testing, deployment, operation, maintenance, and modification.
- Conduct machinery and system-level risk assessments covering electrical, electronic, mechanical, control-system, and functional-safety hazards.
- Develop practical risk-reduction and mitigation strategies that comply with OSHA 29 CFR 1910, ISO 13849-1, and other applicable regulations and harmonized standards.
- Evaluate safety functions, safeguards, performance levels, validation requirements, and residual risks using tools and methodologies such as FMEA, FTA, and SISTEMA.
- Support investigations involving product safety incidents, near misses, field concerns, and potential regulatory nonconformities, including root-cause analysis and corrective-action development.
Product and Systems Safety Engineering
- Integrate safety-by-design principles into new products, product enhancements, and customer-specific system configurations.
- Partner with Product and Engineering teams to establish product safety requirements, technical specifications, validation criteria, and acceptance standards.
- Review the safety of warehouse robots, autonomous mobile robots, automated material-handling systems, electrical control panels, safety-related control systems, and associated equipment.
- Provide technical expertise on warehouse robotic systems and applicable requirements, including ASME B30 and ISO 3691-4.
- Develop and maintain product safety documentation, including risk assessments, compliance matrices, technical files, validation records, audit reports, and safety specifications.
Customer and Sales Support
- Consult with customers to identify regulatory and compliance requirements and recommend appropriate safety solutions.
- Strategically promote Hai Robotics’ safety capabilities through sales-enablement initiatives, technical presentations, customer training, and supporting materials.
- Support Sales and Solutions teams in responding to customer questions related to product safety, machinery safety, and regulatory compliance.
- Clearly communicate complex regulatory and technical requirements to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
- Serve as a trusted product safety advisor during customer design reviews, solution evaluations, and project discussions.
Global Collaboration and Project Leadership
- Serve as a product and machinery safety subject-matter expert within Hai Robotics’ Global Safety Team.
- Lead cross-functional safety initiatives involving Product, Engineering, Sales, Solutions, Delivery, Service, and Customer teams across multiple regions.
- Manage global safety projects independently, including priorities, stakeholders, timelines, risks, and deliverables.
- Promote consistent global product safety practices while addressing country- and region-specific regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with international customers, certification bodies, technical partners, and regulatory agencies.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- At least seven years of experience in compliance engineering, product safety, machinery safety, or a related field, with a focus on machinery systems.
- Demonstrated technical knowledge of warehouse robotics, autonomous mobile robots, automated material-handling systems, or related technologies.
- Working knowledge of relevant standards, including ASME B30 and ISO 3691-4.
- Expert knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910 and the application of applicable ANSI standards.
- Experience applying machinery risk‑assessment methodologies, including EN ISO 12100.
- Experience applying ISO 13849-1, IEC 62061, IEC 60204-1, NFPA 79, UL 508A, and ANSI B11.0.
- Advanced proficiency with engineering and risk‑analysis tools, including CAD, FMEA, FTA, and SISTEMA.
- Experience evaluating electrical, electronic, mechanical, control, and functional‑safety systems.
- Ability to translate complex regulatory requirements into clear technical specifications and engineering requirements.
- Strong analytical, technical‑writing, problem‑solving, documentation, and project‑management skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across global, cross‑functional, and multicultural teams.
- Business‑level English proficiency equivalent to CEFR C1 or higher.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally based on business and project needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting notified‑body certification under the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC or other applicable EU machinery regulations.
- NEBOSH National Diploma or an equivalent safety qualification, particularly within high‑throughput logistics environments.
- Certified Machinery Safety Expert certification or equivalent PILZ‑accredited machinery safety training.
- Lean Six Sigma certification and experience with process‑optimization methodologies, including value‑stream mapping.
- TÜV Rheinland Functional Safety certification, with knowledge of IEC 61508, ISO 26262, or related functional‑safety standards.
- PMP certification or demonstrated experience applying PMI project‑management methodologies.
- Background in electrical or electronic product development.
- Experience working with multinational testing laboratories, certification bodies, customers, and regulatory agencies.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross‑functional projects independently in robotics, industrial automation, or high‑throughput logistics environments.
Travel up to 30% / Primarily Domestic, but with some international travel
