CF Industries in Sergeant Bluff, IA invites energetic chemical engineering students for a summer intern/co-op role providing process engineering support to ensure safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly plant operations.

You will collaborate with process engineers, operations, maintenance and EHS to deliver practical solutions while developing hands-on skills in data analysis, PFDs/P&IDs, and project documentation.

Qualifications

  • Must be a current college student enrolled in an ABET‑accredited Chemical Engineering program.
  • Previous co-op or intern experience is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication is required.
  • Ability to collect field data and perform routine field engineering work in an operating chemical facility.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Commitment to a summer internship or 7-8 month co-op.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in MOCs, PHAs, LOCA studies, and incident investigations for EHS solutions.
  • Support maintenance during turnarounds with recommendations and inspections.
  • Maintain professional communication with all departments and plant personnel.

Job Summary:

Provides process engineering support in a collaborative environment to enhance the safe, efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly operations of the nitrogen fertilizer plants under the guidance of Process Engineers. The process engineering co-op/intern works with other engineering disciplines as well as operations, maintenance, and EHS to ensure solutions meet overall business objectives.

Job Description:
  1. As holistic system thinkers, monitor and report on performance of process units and key variables impacting plant efficiency, capacity, catalyst performance, emissions, and process safety.
  2. Proactively evaluate process and equipment performance to reduce plant upsets and generate solutions to resolve problems with process chemistry and equipment including pumps, compressors, turbines, heat exchangers, absorbers, strippers, boilers, combustion equipment, reactors, and high pressure steam systems.
  3. Optimize process performance through troubleshooting, process modeling, data analysis, process tests, and technical support to the operations organization.
  4. Complete process engineering studies and provide comprehensive process engineering support during collaborative design of new installations and processes.
  5. Prepare and review documents including PFDs, P&IDs, scopes of work, and equipment specifications to support the capital process.
  6. Participate in MOCs, PHAs, LOPA studies, and incident investigations to identify and implement process safety and other EHS solutions.
  7. Support Maintenance and Operations during turnarounds by providing pre-turnaround process engineering recommendations, performing equipment inspections related to process issues, assist with catalyst replacements.
  8. Maintain excellent communication and a professional working relationship with all departments and plant personnel.
Successful incumbents will have:
  1. Must be a current college student enrolled in an accredited Chemical Engineering program at an ABET‑accredited institution.
  2. Previous co‑op or intern experience is preferred.
  3. Strong communication skills (written and verbal) required. Must be able to effectively communicate and interact with personnel throughout the organization.
  4. Ability and willingness to collect field data, enter process equipment for inspections, and otherwise perform routine field engineering work in an operating chemical facility environment.
  5. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  6. Commitment to fulfill a summer internship or 7-8 month co‑op assignment.
