Job summary

Vertex’s Process Chemistry Co-op is a 6‑month training program for students pursuing bachelor’s or master’s degrees in chemistry related fields. The role focuses on organic synthesis, process development, and scalable manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients for clinical trials.

You’ll gain hands-on experience with flow chemistry, photoredox catalysis, high-throughput experimentation, and machine learning tools while collaborating with chemists and engineers in a fast‑paced environment.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.
• Third-year undergraduate student or above at the start of the co-op term.
• Completion of undergraduate organic chemistry coursework and associated laboratory courses.
• Strong interest in synthetic organic chemistry, catalysis, process chemistry, or pharmaceutical development.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States, now and in the future; Vertex does not sponsor internships/co-ops.

Responsibilities

• Train in advanced laboratory & experimental design techniques (flow chemistry, photochemistry, DoE, Bayesian optimization).
• Work with chemists and engineers to design novel chemical experiments and discuss results.
• Apply good laboratory techniques to syntheses of complex organic compounds per plan.
• Maintain a detailed electronic lab notebook and present project progress to the team.
• Operate analytical instruments (NMR, HPLC, GC, LC-MS, IR) and interpret data.
• Deliver a formal research summary upon completion of the co-op.
