Job summary

Commonwealth of VA Careers in Virginia Beach seeks a Probation Officer I to supervise adults on probation, parole, or post-release supervision. You will use evidence-based strategies to promote pro-social behavior and reduce recidivism while coordinating with community resources.

Responsibilities include assessments, case planning, court testimony, and ensuring compliance. A background in rehabilitation or related fields and VCIN certification are preferred; bilingual applicants are encouraged.

Qualifications

• Experience delivering counseling/casework to adults.
• Knowledge of criminal justice system and case management.
• Ability to write reports and communicate effectively in writing.
• Independent judgement and action when needed.
• Ability to work with diverse groups of probationers and colleagues.
• Eligibility and readiness to obtain VCIN certification.

Responsibilities

• Provide day-to-day supervision to adults under probation, parole, or post-release supervision.
• Assess criminogenic and treatment needs; develop individualized case plans.
• Use motivational interviewing and CBT techniques to encourage positive change.
• Coordinate with treatment providers, employers, and community resources.
• Conduct home and community visits as required by supervision plans.
• Prepare pre-sentence investigations, progress reports; testify in court as needed.
• Monitor compliance and take actions including revocation when necessary.
