Department Summary

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is the intellectual hub of the University of Oregon, serving nearly two-thirds of all students. Home to more than 800 faculty across 50+ departments and programs in the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, CAS is a dynamic and interdisciplinary academic community. The Geography Department is an instructional department within the College of Arts and Sciences, which supports significant research activities in various types of geographic study. Research and graduate education in the Department of Geography focuses on the following subfields: (a) Geographic information science: cartography, GIS, data analysis and visualization, spatial analysis and modeling; (b) Human geography: political-ethnic, cultural, human-environment relations, and behavioral geography; (c) Physical geography: Quaternary studies, biogeography, climatology and climatic change, geomorphology; (d) Environmental studies: forest and ecosystem issues, river and watershed issues, biodiversity and global environmental change, policy and law, environmental applications of GIS; and (e) Geographic education.

Position Summary

The Department of Geography at the University of Oregon seeks to establish a pool of qualified candidates interested in Pro Tem Instructor positions. Depending on departmental needs and candidate qualifications, Pro Tem Instructors may teach lower or upper division undergraduate courses, such as The Natural Environment, The Human Planet, and Society, Culture, and Place.

Positions are limited duration appointments potentially renewable for up to a total of three years, based on programmatic need, funding, and performance.

Minimum Requirements
  • Master's degree in Geography or related field.
  • One (1) year post-secondary instructional experience.
Professional Competencies
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to contribute to institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Geography or related field.
  • Teaching experience in Human Geography, Physical Geography, or GIScience.
