Job Summary:

The Sonographer is responsible for using diagnostic medical equipment to diagnose various medical conditions. Sonography, or ultrasonography, is the use of sound waves to generate an image for assessment and diagnosis. May specialize in obstetric/gynecologic, abdominal, neurosonography, or breast sonography.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Review patient's medical history and physician's instructions.
  2. Prepare equipment for procedure. Select appropriate equipment settings.
  3. Explain procedure to patient and record any relevant medical history. Direct the patient to optimal positions.
  4. Spread gel on the skin to aid sound wave transmission.
  5. Operate equipment to direct high-frequency sound waves; collect reflected echoes to form images for interpretation.
  6. View the screen during the scan, identify visual cues, and select images for physician review.
  7. Take measurements, analyze results, and prepare preliminary reports.
  8. Maintain patient records and equipment.
  9. Ensure confidentiality and comply with safety and infection control policies.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.
