Job Summary

The Supplemental Physical Therapist assesses patients, develops and initiates treatment plans based on evaluation results, including measurements of neuromuscular and skeletal functions. The incumbent documents findings, monitors progress, and provides instructions to patients and caregivers. The therapist offers recommendations and supports program development alongside physical therapists and management. This role also involves mentoring and overseeing the development, guidance, and training of assistants, students, interns, and technicians regarding patient care.

A physical therapist practicing direct access evaluates and examines current patient conditions to identify movement and mobility dysfunctions but does not diagnose illnesses or diseases. Diagnoses established by healthcare providers are considered during evaluations.

We are seeking a Physical Therapist (PT) to join our acute care team at Southwest Hospital. This supplemental position requires a minimum of 2 weekend shifts (Saturdays and/or Sundays) every 6 weeks. The hours are from 8 am to 4:30 pm with flexibility.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's or graduate degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited program.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current license to practice Physical Therapy issued by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners or the Physical Therapy Compact Commission.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support.

Additional qualifications for direct access practice:

  • Doctoral degree with residency or fellowship, or licensed therapist with 30 hours of continuing competence activities in differential diagnosis.

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

  • Preferred one (1) year of experience.
  • Ability and willingness to mentor/train staff and supervise interns/students.
  • Provides clinical leadership and demonstrates increasing expertise for specific patient groups or enhances existing programs.
  • Serves as a resource for hospital or departmental committees or initiates leadership in departmental projects.
  • Designs and implements staff development programs to improve clinical competencies.
  • Physical requirements include occasional lifting up to 75-100 pounds, carrying up to 30 pounds, prolonged standing, and frequent walking, stooping, and squatting.
  • Necessary skills include fine hand dexterity, eye-hand coordination, effective communication, and the ability to monitor instruments and recognize visual cues.
  • Flexibility in scheduling and ability to move within patient care areas as needed.
