Position Details

Position Summary

The Patient Care Assistant is an unlicensed staff member responsible for completing delegated tasks from the RN in a caring, culturally sensitive manner with excellent customer service. They demonstrate competence in critical thinking, interpersonal relationships, and technical skills related to delegated tasks. Responsibilities include providing basic nursing skills such as vital signs, pulse oximetry, blood glucose testing, ADLs, recording intake/output, specimen collection, applying/removing compression stockings, managing drains, catheters, NG tubes, and ostomies, among others. They must document all tasks appropriately and maintain a clean, safe environment, including high fall risk interventions and patient safety precautions. They promptly notify RNs of any changes in patient condition or needs and perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions

• Perform basic nursing skills and document all tasks accurately.
• Maintain a clean and safe patient environment, including high fall risk precautions.
• Ensure proper hand hygiene and follow standard precautions and isolation principles.
• Care for patients in restraints, reorient confused patients, and reinforce patient/family education on safety.
• Report any significant changes in patient condition to the RN promptly.
• Perform other duties as assigned, demonstrating professional, clinical, and technical competencies.

Minimum Requirements

• High School Graduate or GED.

Licensure and Certification

• Basic Life Support (BLS) Heartsaver (AHA) within 14 days.
• Certified Nurse Aide (CNA), Medical Assistant Diploma, or documented Fundamentals of Nursing course completion.
• Alternatively, 18 months in a specialty tech position or completion of the Gold Standard Intern Program/Acute Care School with KU Health System.
