Job description

The Mental Health Technician Nurse Secretary helps provide therapeutic services to psychiatric patients under Trauma Informed Care principles in accordance with the Registered Nurse's directions and the established treatment plan. Working under general supervision for routine situations, this role serves psychiatric patients across the lifespan through various treatment programs, such as educational groups and 1:1 interactions.

Responsibilities include:

1. Observing and reporting changes in patient symptoms and behaviors to the Registered Nurse to facilitate necessary adjustments to the care plan.
2. Communicating effectively and compassionately with patients and families to involve them in the care process, including facilitating patient educational groups.
3. Performing safety checks and environmental rounds, documenting procedures, and updating the Registered Nurse on patient progress.
4. Checking supply stocks to meet patient and nursing needs within budgetary constraints in line with department goals.
5. Supporting patient care delegated by the Registered Nurse, including measuring vital signs and capillary blood glucose, preparing EKGs, transporting patients, and assisting with ambulation and elimination needs.
6. Responding to verbal and nonverbal communication from psychiatric patients empathetically to meet their needs.
7. Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education Requirements:

• Required: High School Diploma or equivalent
• Preferred: Successful completion of Nursing Assistant Certificate and/or an Associate’s Degree in a human service field

Experience:

• Preferred: At least one year of experience in behavioral health or healthcare fields

Licensure/Certification:

• Required: BLS (CPR) certification from American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider; STARR (verbal and physical de-escalation) training to be completed within 30 days of hire
• Preferred: Listed as a Nursing Aide I with North Carolina Division of Facilities Services; Certification through American Association of Psychiatric Technicians (NCPT Level I-II)
