Job description

Overview

PURPOSE STATEMENT:

Plan, direct, and implement activity therapy programs as a component of the patient’s treatment plan.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Complete activity assessment through patient observation and interviews with patients and their families, gathering information on the patient’s needs, skills, interests, and limitations to develop and implement the treatment plan.
  2. Plan, organize, direct, and implement activities within the treatment program to facilitate patient progress toward treatment goals.
  3. Plan and execute an activities program including therapeutic leisure skills, leisure education, and leisure awareness.
  4. Facilitate and lead activity sessions aimed at improving patients' mental and physical well-being.
  5. Instruct patients in various activities and techniques, such as sports, dance, music, art, or relaxation techniques tailored to their needs.
  6. Develop and implement treatment plans with activity interventions that meet patient needs and interests, supporting their achievement of treatment goals.
  7. Engage patients in therapeutic activities, including exercise, games, and community outings.
  8. Assist patients in learning social skills necessary for independence.
  9. Modify activities to suit the needs of specific groups.
  10. Maintain a positive, empathetic, and professional attitude towards patients at all times. Address and work to resolve patient complaints, prioritizing patient safety.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreational Therapy, or a related field required.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least three years of experience in recreation within a healthcare setting, with knowledge of the patient population served, required.
  • Previous experience in healthcare recreation is preferred.

LICENSES/DESIGNATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or in the process of obtaining national certification; or certified in a related specialty (Art, Dance, Music, etc.), or hold a clinical professional license (LCPC, LPC, etc.) with certification in expressive therapy required.
  • CPR, de-escalation, and restraint certification required (training provided upon hire).
  • First aid certification may be required based on state or facility policies.
