Printing Machine Operators

Job Purpose:
Set up and operate various types of printing machines, such as offset, letterset, intaglio, gravure presses, or screen printers to produce prints on paper or other materials.

Essential Duties and/or Responsibilities:

1. Inspect printed products for clarity, color accuracy, conformance, and defects.
2. Start and control printing machines by operating controls and levers.
3. Reposition plates, adjust pressure rolls, or fine-tune machines for quality improvements.
4. Adjust speed, temperature, ink flow, and pressure settings of equipment.
5. Review job orders for details like quantities, production times, materials, and colors.
6. Install printing plates, rollers, and other components using hand tools according to specifications.
7. Monitor the printing process to maintain quality and detect malfunctions, making adjustments as needed.
8. Operate at slow speeds to ensure proper ink coverage and alignment.
9. Load and position unprinted materials onto equipment.
10. Manage ink and color materials, adjusting for color and viscosity as required.
11. Maintain and repair equipment as necessary.
12. Mix and test inks, paints, and solvents per specifications.
13. Clean and lubricate machines and components.
14. Remove printed materials and transport to drying or storage areas.
15. Monitor gauges and indicators to ensure proper machine operation.
16. Troubleshoot operational issues and determine solutions.
17. Perform routine maintenance and determine when repairs are needed.
18. Conduct quality tests and inspections to ensure standards.
19. Apply knowledge of machinery, production processes, and quality control techniques.
20. Select appropriate tools and equipment for tasks.
21. Manage time effectively for oneself and team members.
22. Repair machines or systems using appropriate tools.
23. Identify and solve complex problems related to printing operations.
