Job summary

Leonardo DRS Naval Power Systems is seeking a Principal Systems Engineer to provide technical authority for complex power electronics system designs and architecture. You will review customer specs, define architectures, and develop robust design documentation and budget estimates for proposals.

The role requires leadership across large multi-disciplinary teams, risk mitigation, and verification through simulation, analysis, and lab testing. U.S.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent; Master’s degree preferred.
• 10+ years of detailed design experience in power applications.
• Proficiency with Matlab and Simulink for simulation of electrical systems down to component level.
• Model‑based design experience of power electronic systems; real-time modeling experience.
• Experience with Navy or other defense applications and market.

Responsibilities

• Review customer specifications and requirements, and develop designs to best support them, including cost as a key design variable.
• Define and drive the architecture of complex systems and subsystems relating to power electronics, drives, and uninterruptible power supplies.
• Lead creation of system-level technical documentation and budget estimates for proposals; identify and drive strategies to retire key development risks.
• Verify product or subsystem performance through simulation, analysis, and/or laboratory test; ensure validation approaches are appropriate and complete for program needs.
• Generate and manage the design requirements used to specify components and subsystems through an RTM, ensuring end-to-end traceability to customer and regulatory requirements.
• Provide technical leadership on large projects, including directing technical execution, identifying and delegating tasks to an engineering team, and driving completion of activities on time and within budget.
• Mentor engineers and support technical reviews to ensure technical rigor and consistency across the program.

Job Summary

The Principal Systems Engineer is responsible for providing technical authority and leadership for the design and development of complex power electronics systems. This role involves reviewing customer specifications and requirements to develop cost-effective designs, defining system and subsystem architectures, and creating comprehensive technical documentation and budget estimates for proposals. The engineer will identify and implement strategies to mitigate key development risks, verify product performance through simulation, analysis, and laboratory testing, and generate and manage detailed design requirements using a requirements traceability matrix (RTM). Additionally, this position provides technical leadership across large or multi‑disciplinary projects, coordinating and delegating work within the engineering team and influencing technical decisions to ensure successful execution.

• Model‑based design experience of power electronic systems, proficiency preferred.
• Real‑time modeling experience of power electronic systems, proficiency preferred.
• Experience with Navy or other defense applications and market.

U.S. Citizenship required. This position may require an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.
