Job summary

Red Hat, LLC is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to provide technical leadership for the Foreman-based Satellite platform. You will design, develop, and scale enterprise-grade infrastructure management features, mentor engineers, and drive architectural decisions across teams in an Agile setting.

You will work with Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, and Sinatra while containerizing solutions and leveraging cloud platforms.

Qualifications

• Experience with Linux OS on the user level.
• DevOps skills: from writing container files to adding tests and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
• Proven experience in Agile development environments.
• Hands-on experience with upstream Foreman community (development, contributions, or collaboration).
• Strong programming skills in Python, Ruby, Go, or Java.
• Experience with REST APIs, distributed systems, and cloud-native architectures.
• Strong experience with container technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenShift.
• Contributions to open-source projects beyond Foreman.

The Red Hat Foreman team (https://theforeman.org/) is looking for a highly experienced Principal Software Engineer. In this role you will provide technical leadership in designing, developing, and scaling enterprise‑grade systems that manage and automate infrastructure at scale. You will shape architecture, drive innovation, and mentor engineers while working closely with cross‑functional teams in an Agile environment. Foreman is a systems‑management solution built on Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, and Sinatra, supporting provisioning on hypervisors such as VMware, kubevirt, libvirt and clouds such as AWS, GCE, Azure. It also supports the OpenSCAP security compliance framework.

Responsibilities

• Ensure high standards for code quality, testing, security, and maintainability.
• Review and test contributions from community members.
• Perform live demos of your work on a regular basis to project users and developers.
• Drive the end‑to‑end development of complex functionality, which includes design, implementation, testing, and presentation.

Qualifications

• Experience with Linux OS on the user level.
• DevOps skills: from writing container files to adding tests and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
• Demonstrated ability to work with minimal local supervision as part of a geographically distributed team.
• Deep experience using and operating Linux.
• Experience with GitHub Actions, GitLab pipelines or similar CI/CD systems.
• Extensive experience in software engineering, with a strong track record in building and scaling complex systems.
• Proven experience working in Agile development environments.
• Hands‑on experience with the upstream Foreman community (development, contributions, or collaboration).
• Strong experience with container technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenShift.
• Experience designing and implementing AI/ML solutions, including building AI agents or automation systems.
• Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, Ruby, Go, or Java.
• Experience with REST APIs, distributed systems, and cloud‑native architectures.

Salary and Compensation

The salary range for this position is $151,510.00 – $249,950.00. Actual offer will be based on your qualifications. RedHat determines compensation based on factors including job location, experience, applicable skills, training, external market value, and internal pay equity. The position may also be eligible for bonus, commission, and/or equity. For Remote‑US locations the salary range may differ based on location but will remain commensurate with job duties and relevant experience.
