Job summary

athenahealth is seeking a Principal Software Engineer for its Electronic Dental Records (EDR) platform in Boston, MA (Hybrid). You will lead the architectural direction, define engineering approaches, and drive multiple teams to modernize and scale the EDR platform while navigating legacy systems.

The role emphasizes designing for long-term reliability, establishing standards for AI-assisted development, and mentoring senior engineers within a healthcare-focused product environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
• 12+ years of engineering experience in a Product Engineering organization with leadership.
• Deep backend expertise in Java and Spring Boot; design and shipping of distributed systems.
• Proven experience making system-level architectural decisions beyond implementation.
• Hands-on use of AI coding assistants or agentic dev tools with norms for their use.
• Leading full-stack teams with mentoring and design oversight.
• Experience with PostgreSQL, AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, Springboot.
• React is strongly preferred; familiarity with healthcare concepts is a strong plus.
• Experience in Agile delivery environments, especially AI-assisted delivery.

Responsibilities

• Own system-level architecture across product domains, balancing scalability and reliability.
• Define AI-augmented engineering model and guardrails for tooling and workflows.
• Drive a spec-first culture with precise requirements and design reviews.
• Set standards for AI output quality, ensuring correctness, security, and maintainability.
• Lead cross-team technical alignment and resolve architectural trade-offs.
• Prototype and productionize AI-powered capabilities for developer productivity and client features.
• Evolve engineering practices including code review, testing strategy, and delivery processes.
• Grow the engineering organization through mentoring and establishing high technical standards.
