ABC Fitness seeks a Principal Engineer to lead architecture and modernization across critical software systems. You will remain hands-on, shaping domain models, APIs, and data access while guiding teams through practical refactoring and performance improvements.

You will drive architectural decisions, maintain software quality, and partner with product, security, and data teams to deliver durable, scalable solutions in a remote-capable environment.

Qualifications

• Substantial experience designing, building, operating, and evolving production backend systems, services, APIs, and distributed applications.
• Ability to move from architecture into code, configuration, instrumentation, and diagnosis.
• Proven track record of leading modernization initiatives and architectural decisions.

Responsibilities

• Lead software architecture and modernization of legacy applications into domain-oriented software.
• Stay hands-on in code across backend ecosystems (Java/Spring Boot, Golang, Node/TypeScript).
• Design clear domain models, services contracts, and APIs.
• Modernize application foundations with upgrades and refactoring.
• Engineer for correctness, performance, and reliability across systems.
• Improve data access, caching, messaging, and event patterns.
• Raise the bar for code quality, testing, and validation.
• Create reusable engineering patterns and reference implementations.
• Turn technical strategy into cross-team execution with stakeholders.
