Job summary

Upstart seeks a Principal Machine Learning Engineer to lead the ML Platform initiatives across our fintech-focused products. You will drive embedding architectures, automate end-to-end ML workflows, and scale training pipelines with robust monitoring and retraining strategies.

You will collaborate with Research, Data Science, ML Platform, and Pricing teams to deliver high-impact improvements in predictive accuracy and inference efficiency.

Qualifications

• 5–7+ years in applied ML with production-scale modeling.
• Strong ML/statistics fundamentals and data prep to deployment.
• Experience with fintech pricing or risk modeling.
• Proficiency in Python and major ML frameworks.
• Ability to lead in ambiguous, high-impact domains.
• Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams.
• End-to-end model development: data prep to deployment.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering initiatives that scale ML innovations and tooling.
• Design and own unified embeddings platform for training and serving.
• Automate learning pipelines and monitoring with minimal manual effort.
• Define the roadmap for next-gen ML Platform balancing short- and long-term needs.
• Collaborate with Data Eng, ML Platform, Pricing, and product teams.
