Job summary

athenahealth is seeking a Principal Frontend Engineer in Boston to set the architecture and long-term direction for frontend across Clinicals applications. This hybrid role blends hands-on development with cross‑team influence to raise frontend quality and consistency at scale.

You will lead the modernization to a unified React-based platform, migrate data access to GraphQL, and build a scalable component library while mentoring engineers and shaping governance across teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
• 10–15 years of professional software engineering experience with frontend architecture at scale.
• Expert-level proficiency in JavaScript and TypeScript in production environments.
• Deep expertise in React.js, design systems, and large-scale component libraries.
• Strong proficiency in Node.js for build tooling and SSR.
• Demonstrated experience with GraphQL and data access patterns.
• Exposure to AWS, Jenkins, Harness, and cloud-based frontend infrastructure.
• Ability to define and lead frontend architecture strategies across teams.
• Experience in Agile SDLC and cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Architect and lead the design of large-scale frontend systems using JavaScript, React.js, TypeScript, and Node.js.
• Establish frontend engineering standards and patterns adopted across Clinicals teams.
• Define data access contracts via GraphQL/REST for frontend-backend integration.
• Drive multi-year frontend modernization roadmap and risk management.
• Partner with leadership, PM, and design to align tech with product goals.
• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers to grow capabilities.
• Evaluate AI-assisted tooling to improve productivity and quality.
• Lead cross-team reviews and architecture discussions with documented outcomes.
• Address technical debt and performance bottlenecks across frontend codebase.
• Represent frontend in planning and platform investment discussions.
