Job description

We anticipate the application window for this opening will close on - 5 May 2025

At Medtronic you can begin a life-long career of exploration and innovation, while helping champion healthcare access and equity for all. You’ll lead with purpose, breaking down barriers to innovation in a more connected, compassionate world.

A Day in the Life

The Affera Mapping and Ablation System is used for mapping electrical activity in the heart, localizing catheters within the heart chambers, delivering ablation energy to treat heart rhythm disorders, and annotating 3D regions where ablation energy is delivered.

As a Principal Hardware Engineer, you will be developing the next generation technology for treatment of heart rhythm disorders. You will be responsible for developing novel electronics for measuring diagnostic signals and delivering ablation energy. You will work directly with some of the industry's prominent experts in the field of medical device engineering in a fun and collaborative office environment.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience designing, developing, and testing real-time, high-performance digital/analog electronics and FPGA firmware. The ideal candidate can take ownership of hardware and firmware development on one or more products, work collaboratively with other engineering teams, and mentor less experienced engineers, and is passionate about working on products that will have a positive impact on the lives of millions.

About the Affera Mapping and Ablation System

The Affera Mapping and Ablation System is an innovative medical technology designed to treat patients with cardiac arrhythmias. The system involves advanced mapping techniques to create detailed images of the heart's electrical activity, helping physicians identify abnormal areas causing arrhythmias. Once identified, the Affera Ablation System delivers targeted energy to disrupt these abnormal signals, restoring normal heart rhythm. You will be working on cutting-edge technology in the electrophysiology field. This role offers a rare chance to be at the forefront of developing groundbreaking technology that can disrupt the industry.

*This role will sit onsite at 320 Nevada St. #401, Newton, MA 02460 with the potential to work a hybrid schedule*

  1. Conduct research, design, development, and testing of electrical hardware including mixed-signal circuit boards, FPGAs, microcontrollers, and electro-mechanical components.
  2. Ensure reliability, develop technical specifications for production, analyze hardware configuration and processing solutions, and test hardware conformance to specifications; may include designing new or modifying existing products.
  3. Other responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree and 7 years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree with 5 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Extensive experience architecting and implementing FPGA code and digital and mixed-signal board design.
  2. Experience with FPGA design using VHDL.
  3. Understanding of electronic design, analog/digital circuit design.
  4. Experience with OrCAD schematic capture and PCB layout tools.
  5. Hands-on experience using lab test equipment (e.g. multimeters, oscilloscopes, logic and network analyzers) for system integration, debugging, and testing.
  6. Experience in designing and testing medical equipment and familiarity with 60601-1 standard.
  7. C/C++ embedded device (microcontroller) programming experience.
  8. Ability to work in an agile development environment.
  9. Interest in gaining an understanding of cardiac electrophysiology.
  10. Staying current with new technologies and being able to quickly learn and apply new tools and techniques as needed.
