About the Role
The Principal EV Charging & Energy Systems Architect will serve as DynaChrg’s senior domain architect for AC and DC EV charging, power systems, energy management, dynamic load management, and grid-integrated charging.
This person will translate business, customer, utility, operational, and regulatory needs into clear functional requirements, product behavior, energy-management logic, design documentation, and acceptance criteria.
You will work directly with the CEO and executive leadership and collaborate across Product, Technology, Software Development, Hardware Integration, QA, Operations, and Business Development.
This is not a charger-hardware design role or a software-development management position. However, you must have sufficient software-development experience and exposure to participate effectively in product-roadmap discussions, architecture reviews, sprint activities, implementation decisions, QA validation, and releases.
What You Will Do
- Serve as DynaChrg’s senior subject-matter expert for AC and DC EV charging, charging management systems, power systems, and energy management.
- Help shape DynaChrg’s product strategy and roadmap based on customer needs, technology changes, utility requirements, industry standards, and market opportunities.
- Translate business and operational needs into functional specifications, use cases, workflows, user stories, operating rules, and testable acceptance criteria.
- Define and review functional requirements for dynamic load management, power allocation, demand management, and energy optimization.
- Define how EV-charging functionality should behave under normal, constrained, and failure conditions.
- Apply strong knowledge of electrical-service capacity, transformers, switchgear, panels, metering, charging demand, building loads, and distributed energy resources.
- Evaluate AC and DC charger behavior, capabilities, limitations, telemetry, metering, firmware, and control responsiveness across multiple OEMs.
- Define platform requirements for onboarding, monitoring, controlling, and managing multi-vendor charging equipment.
- Provide domain leadership for OCPP 1.6J, OCPP 2.0.1, OCPI, and ISO 15118.
- Define functional requirements for charger communication, authorization, transactions, smart charging, telemetry, configuration, error handling, pricing, and interoperability.
- Collaborate with Technology and Software Development teams to translate approved requirements and energy-management logic into scalable product functionality.
- Work with QA to develop test scenarios and validate that delivered functionality meets its business, operational, and technical objectives.
- Support interoperability testing, OEM qualification, commissioning, field troubleshooting, and investigation of charger or platform performance issues.
- Support integrations involving EV chargers, battery storage, solar systems, building loads, meters, SCADA, building-management systems, utility platforms, and telematics providers.
- Develop and maintain clear functional specifications, workflows, sequence diagrams, operating logic, state diagrams, data requirements, and design decisions.
- Support strategic customer discussions, utility engagements, technical proposals, partnerships, and pilot programs.
- DynaChrg works with charger OEMs and does not design or manufacture charging hardware. This role requires strong knowledge of charger architecture and operating behavior but does not own OEM hardware design or certification.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, Energy Systems, Control Systems, or a closely related discipline.
- At least eight years of relevant professional experience.
- At least five years of direct experience with EV charging, charging management systems, energy-management systems, distributed energy resources, or real-time power-control applications.
- Deep understanding of AC and DC EV-charging architecture, charger behavior, electrical limitations, control capabilities, and failure conditions.
- Strong working knowledge of electrical power systems, three-phase power, transformers, switchgear, panels, metering, load management, demand control, and power quality.
- Experience defining dynamic load-management, power-allocation, demand-management, or energy-optimization requirements and functional logic.
- Practical experience with OCPP 1.6J and OCPP 2.0.1, including charger communication, smart charging, transactions, telemetry, configuration, and interoperability.
- Practical knowledge and experience with OCPI and ISO 15118.
- Experience working with Product, Software Development, and QA teams throughout the software-development lifecycle.
- Ability to translate complex business, electrical, operational, and regulatory needs into clear functional requirements and acceptance criteria.
- Sufficient familiarity with cloud platforms, APIs, microservices, databases, IoT communications, cybersecurity, event-driven systems, and real-time data processing to work effectively with software teams.
- Strong technical writing, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience contributing to the roadmap or functional architecture of a commercial charging station management system, energy-management system, DERMS, microgrid controller, or utility platform.
- Experience with public, multifamily, fleet, workplace, municipal, or DC fast-charging deployments.
- Experience integrating EV charging with battery storage, solar, building loads, meters, SCADA, building-management systems, or utility platforms.
- Experience with V1G, V2G, B2G, bidirectional charging, demand response, or distributed-energy controls.
- Participation in OCPP conformance testing, Open Charge Alliance Plugfests, interoperability laboratories, or similar industry testing.
- Familiarity with California Type Evaluation Program requirements for commercial EV charging.
- Familiarity with utility tariffs, demand charges, grid constraints, and managed-charging programs.
- Familiarity with power-system modeling and analytical tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, Python, OpenDSS, GridLAB-D, pandapower, ETAP, or comparable platforms.
- Experience working directly with executive leadership, utilities, charger OEMs, customers, and strategic partners.
