CLP Engineering (CLPE) is seeking an accomplished Principal Electrical Engineer-Power Systems for a senior role on our engineering team. Due to the nature of our work as a Federal Contractor, candidates must be US Citizens.

CLPE is a full-service electric utility solutions engineering firm in Denver with over twenty years of experience in electrical utility system ownership, upgrades, maintenance, and operations through our sister company, City Light & Power. We offer a wide range of power system engineering services to investor-owned, municipal, cooperative, government, industrial, and commercial clients.

The Principal Electrical Engineer is a specialist in electrical engineering, impacting the direction and resource allocation of CLPE programs and projects.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Possess and maintain broad and in-depth knowledge of principles, practices, procedures, and standards related to utility power distribution systems.
  • Apply expertise to complex problems.
  • Develop concept design alternatives, calculations, analysis, and estimates for system improvement projects.
  • Lead the engineering design of sub-transmission systems, substations, switching stations, and complex power distribution systems.
  • Develop conceptual and detailed engineering packages for microgrid designs with renewable and fossil fuel generation assets.
  • Prepare, review, and approve design reports and procedures as a Lead Engineer.
  • Develop electrical system models in ETAP or similar software, validating system study findings.
  • Develop electrical specifications for major electrical apparatus.
  • Maintain strong customer relationships.
  • Deep knowledge of power system protection and relaying schemes.
  • Conduct field walk-downs to determine project requirements.
  • Prepare cost estimates and assist during project execution.
  • Analyze electrical fault events, power quality issues, and system load scenarios.
  • Stay current with industry standards and codes, ensuring compliance.
  • Mentor junior engineers and oversee their tasks.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering with emphasis in power systems.
  • 12+ years in electric utility industry, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • PE License required.
  • Expertise in power system analysis, distribution modeling, and protective device coordination.
  • Experience with medium voltage substations and distribution systems.
  • Proficiency with MS Project and power system software (ETAP, SKM, EasyPower).
  • Strong mentoring, analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Travel & Other Requirements
  • 25% travel to project sites.
  • Must be a US citizen and able to obtain Military Base Access Security Clearance.
  • Valid driver's license required.
Benefits & Compensation
  • Competitive benefits including health insurance, 401k, paid time off, holidays.
  • Salary: $150,000 - $180,000 annually, based on experience, plus potential incentives.
