Job description

Principal Data Engineer

Location: Anywhere in the US (Remote)

Position Summary

Bentley Systems is hiring a principal data engineer role within our Data Architecture and Engineering team that is part of a larger Data Operations group. This is a role for an experienced, ambitious, and technically-sound data engineer with an interest in sharing knowledge with fellow colleagues. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience building data pipelines, data modeling, data integration, workflow management, and software engineering best practices. The Principal Data Engineer will be responsible for implementing data engineering best practices to solve business problems across many different domains such as product, sales, finance, marketing, and operations. Expertise in managing different data environments across teams and making recommendations on architecture patterns.

Responsibilities

  • Interface with multiple teams of many different disciplines across the business with varying degree of skillset.
  • Mentor and teach fellow data engineers' best practices.
  • Perform code reviews for fellow data engineers to ensure high quality of code and meeting standards.
  • Develop great business understanding and how to leverage data to answer questions and inform the business.
  • Keep up to date with the current best technologies and practices around tools, technology, and frameworks.
  • Able to lead 2-3 large technically challenging projects at the same time while supporting other projects on the team.
  • Manage our present Data Architecture (Snowflake, Matillion, DBT, Terraform) instances.
  • Manage the transition from historical On-Prem SQL Server Database to a modern cloud implementation.

Required Skills

  • 3+ years of experience building and managing scalable cloud data warehouses/lakehouses such as Snowflake, BigQuery, and or Databricks.
  • 3+ years of experience building data pipelines in tools such as Matillion, DBT, Azure Data Factory, Airflow, Spark, or equivalent tool.
  • 3+ years of experience architecting cloud-native solutions in Azure, AWS, or GCP.
  • Fluent in SQL and experience in optimizing SQL queries.
  • Professional experience in a programming language (Python preferred) to build data pipelines with production-quality code.
  • Extensive knowledge of data warehouse data modeling such as dimensional modeling.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code such as Terraform.
  • Experience in building out CI/CD processes to facilitate software engineering best practices using Azure DevOps or an equivalent tool.
  • Exposure to providing high-quality data pipelines for data science and reporting teams to better inform the business.
  • Nice to have experience with real-time data movement utilizing technologies such as Azure Event Hubs or Kafka.
  • Nice to have certifications such as Snowpro or cloud technologies.
