Position Summary

Bentley Systems is hiring a Principal Data Engineer within our Data Architecture and Engineering team, part of a larger Data Operations group. This role is suited for an experienced, ambitious, and technically skilled data engineer interested in sharing knowledge with colleagues. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience building data pipelines, data modeling, data integration, workflow management, and software engineering best practices. The Principal Data Engineer will implement data engineering best practices to solve business problems across various domains such as product, sales, finance, marketing, and operations. They should have expertise in managing different data environments across teams and making architecture pattern recommendations.

Anywhere in the US (Remote)

Responsibilities

1. Interface with multiple teams across the business with varying skill levels.
2. Mentor and teach fellow data engineers best practices.
3. Perform code reviews to ensure high-quality code and standards.
4. Develop a strong understanding of business needs and leverage data accordingly.
5. Stay updated with current best technologies, tools, frameworks, and practices.
6. Lead 2-3 large, technically challenging projects simultaneously while supporting others.
7. Manage our Data Architecture platforms (Snowflake, Matillion, DBT, Terraform).
8. Oversee the transition from on-premises SQL Server databases to cloud solutions.
9. Physical requirements: sitting or standing while working at a computer.

Required Skills

1. 3+ years managing scalable cloud data warehouses/lakehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks).
2. 3+ years building data pipelines with tools like Matillion, DBT, Azure Data Factory, Airflow, Spark.
3. 3+ years architecting cloud-native solutions in Azure, AWS, or GCP.
4. Fluent in SQL; experience optimizing SQL queries.
5. Proficiency in a programming language (preferably Python) for production-quality data pipelines.
6. Extensive knowledge of data warehouse modeling, such as dimensional modeling.
7. Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
8. Experience implementing CI/CD processes using Azure DevOps or similar tools.
9. Experience providing high-quality data pipelines for data science and reporting teams.
10. Nice to have: experience with real-time data movement (Azure Event Hubs, Kafka).
11. Nice to have: certifications like SnowPro or cloud certifications.
