A Day in the Life of a Principal Engineer

You will lead and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure, from urban roadway reconstructions to rural trail projects. You will use AutoCAD and supervise production work, manage projects through all phases, and ensure high-quality deliverables. You will also engage with clients and colleagues, participate in business development, and contribute to the firm's quality initiatives.

Work Schedule for a Principal Engineer

This full-time role offers a hybrid schedule: one day per week in Boston and the rest remote from Providence, RI. The Boston office is accessible via transit, bike, or on foot.

Qualifications of a Principal Engineer

• PE license with the ability to obtain in RI and/or MA
• Bachelor’s or master’s in civil engineering or relevant field
• Minimum 13 years of relevant experience
• Experience as project manager or design lead
• Broad civil engineering knowledge, including roadway, drainage, geometric design, and accessible public spaces
• Experience developing construction documents
• Interest in multimodal and active transportation
• Staff management experience
• Proficiency in AutoCAD or MicroStation, Civil 3D, GEOPAK, or InRoads
• Experience managing projects in the Northeast
• Proposal and scope/fees development experience
• Business development interest

Preferred Additional Skills

• Construction management exposure
• Stormwater infrastructure design experience and software proficiency
• Knowledge of right of way and easement processes
• Traffic engineering and signal design expertise
• Knowledge of advanced multimodal roadway design and NACTO guidance
• Understanding of MUTCD standards
• Experience with transit projects and Safe Routes to School initiatives
• Complete Streets, bikeway, crossing design experience
• Transportation and local agency permit documentation experience
