Job summary

Vytalize is seeking a Principal Engineer to design, build, and operate the CDS Hooks platform and API-driven data delivery system. You will own the architectural foundation for CDS Hooks, REST APIs, and related data pipelines, collaborating with EMR partners and cross-functional teams to embed clinical insights into provider workflows.

You will mentor engineers, define reliability metrics and SLAs, ensure HIPAA-compliant data access, and guide API contracts, versioning, and security patterns

Qualifications

• 8+ years designing, building, and operating API platforms at scale.
• Senior/staff-level contributor owning complex systems end-to-end.
• 3+ years healthcare data integrations, interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7).
• 2+ years hands-on CDS Hooks, SMART on FHIR, or similar APIs.
• Strong REST API design, versioning, error handling, auth patterns.
• Deep understanding of healthcare data integrations and EMR workflows.
• Experience defining reliability metrics, SLAs, and operational metrics.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and implementation of the CDS Hooks platform, including card orchestration and hook context handling.
• Own CDS Hook API contracts and evolution per SMART CDS Hooks spec.
• Lead integration with EMR systems (Epic, NextGen, Athena, ECW) for CDS Hook workflow.
• Design and maintain REST and event-driven APIs exposing clinical data and metrics.
• Establish API contracts, versioning, and deprecation policies for external consumers.
• Implement security patterns (OAuth 2.0, scope-based authorization, auditing).
• Design real-time data pipelines with low latency and high freshness.
• Develop QA frameworks for CDS Hooks and APIs and validate workflows across EMR systems.
• Define reliability metrics and SLAs for CDS Hook delivery and API performance.
• Mentor team members and maintain OpenAPI docs and technical standards.
