Principal Business Development Partner- NorthStar Clean Energy

This position is with NorthStar Clean Energy, a CMS Energy company, and is not an employment position with Consumers Energy.

The Principal Business Development Partner applies technical, commercial, project, and risk management expertise to acquire renewable energy assets, negotiate PPAs, support financing, and oversee development activities for projects (wind, solar, storage) with investments up to $150 million or more in the U.S., aligning with the company's growth plans.

Responsibilities include assembling and managing cross-disciplinary teams for evaluation, valuation, due diligence, negotiation, contracting, acquisition, development, sourcing offtake, and financing of renewable assets.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate teams for due diligence, contract negotiations, acquisitions, and development of renewable energy projects, managing approximately $150 million in annual investments.
  • Oversee development activities to progress assets into design, construction, and operational phases while managing schedule, budget, and risk.
  • Evaluate opportunities, conduct analyses, valuations, and negotiations for asset acquisition and PPAs, mitigating risks.
  • Identify customer renewable energy needs, develop proposals, and negotiate PPAs, maintaining strong customer relationships.
  • Coordinate with internal departments and external stakeholders, including community and regulatory engagement.
  • Build strategic relationships with industry, government, and community entities to foster new opportunities.
  • Support financial modeling, valuation, and project oversight in collaboration with finance and project management teams.
  • Manage land rights, resource assessments, interconnection, permitting, and community engagement activities.
  • Negotiate contracts, develop project agreements, and oversee due diligence processes.
  • Represent the company at public meetings, hearings, and stakeholder engagements.
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related technical field; Master's preferred.
  • PE license or eligible, PMP certification preferred.
  • 7+ years relevant experience, including 3+ years in renewable energy project development, M&A, or related fields.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams, proposal writing, customer relationship management, and strategic planning.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy technologies, permitting, land rights, interconnection, and contractual negotiations.
  • Understanding of sustainability standards like SBTi, Net-Zero, RE100 is a plus.
