Job summary

Clearway Energy Group seeks a Principal Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Engineer to drive preliminary engineering, fire safety, and procurement for stand-alone, hybrid, and co-located BESS facilities. This hybrid role reports to the Sr.

Manager of BESS Engineering and collaborates with project teams, vendors, and consultants to advance a multi‑gigawatt project pipeline. The role requires 8+ years in BESS, strong technical writing, and knowledge of UL/IEEE standards, NFPA codes, and

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in BESS engineering, integration, development, and commissioning for utility-scale projects.
• Experience writing technical specifications, performance requirements, and technical reports, with ability to communicate technical information.
• Knowledge of electrical standards (UL/IEEE), fire safety codes and standards (NFPA), NEC, and interconnection standards.
• Familiarity with TCP/IP, Modbus/TCP, and controls software/hardware platforms.
• Experience with energy market applications and telemetry requirements.
• Knowledge of Power Plant Controllers, EMS, BMS, and SCADA systems.
• Basic software skills, especially MS Excel and Python.
• Familiarity with energy storage product safety standards and certifications.

Responsibilities

• Update and refine EPC contractual agreements for BESS and clarify division of responsibilities.
• Evaluate, track, and optimize BESS design for safety, technology, regulatory, and compliance standards.
• Provide BESS SME support to project teams through development, design, construction, and commissioning.
• Develop consensus on optimal BESS design and operational strategies across organizational lines.
• Serve as technical point of contact with customers and strategic suppliers.
