Job summary

Clearway Energy Group seeks a Principal BESS Engineer to lead preliminary engineering, fire safety, specifications, system optimization, and procurement for stand-alone, hybrid, and co-located BESS facilities. This hybrid role is based in Scottsdale, AZ (preferred) with options at other U.S. offices.

You will drive project teams, vendors, and customers to deliver optimized, compliant BESS solutions. The role requires 8+ years in BESS, strong technical writing, and experience with NFPA, UL, NEC,

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in BESS engineering and commissioning for utility-scale projects.
• Experience writing technical specs, performance requirements, and reports.
• Knowledge of UL/IEEE electrical standards, NFPA codes, NEC, and interconnection standards.
• Familiarity with TCP/IP, Modbus/TCP, and various controls platforms.
• Experience with energy market applications, telemetry, EMS/BMS, SCADA.
• Basic programming in MS Excel and Python.

Responsibilities

• Develop BESS platform requirements from project documents (PPA, IA, etc).
• Assess BESS designs against safety, technology, regulatory, and compliance standards.
• Qualify vendors, update technical specs, and support EPC/RFQ processes.
• Assist permitting and fire safety compliance; support design review and commissioning."
• Coordinate lessons learned and process improvements.
