Koala Health is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead architectural direction across the engineering org. This hands-on role focuses on scalable systems, AI-enabled development, and operational excellence while influencing product, operations, and leadership.

You will mentor engineers, drive reliability, and shape the AI strategy across the company. The role emphasizes an AI-first approach, collaboration with cross-functional teams, and delivering measurable business impact.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Expert-level Ruby on Rails experience with modern web architecture.
• Proven leadership in technical architecture and mentoring.
• Strong product and business judgment with communication skills.
• Deep expertise with AI development including LLMs and AI-powered workflows.
• Authorization to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

• Define and evolve architectural standards across customer-facing and operational systems.
• Lead the design of complex software systems, integrations, workflows, and data models.
• Drive long-term technical strategy while balancing short-term business priorities.
• Identify technical risks and opportunities early and develop pragmatic plans.
• Lead architectural reviews and guide major technical decisions across teams.
• Establish patterns that improve reliability, maintainability, scalability, and developer productivity.
• Champion AI-assisted software development and define best practices for AI tooling.
• Design and build agentic systems that automate engineering and business processes.
• Evaluate emerging AI technologies and determine value for the organization.
• Help iterate on Koala's AI-enabled software development and productivity.
• Ensure AI systems are secure and with appropriate operational safeguards.
• Raise the bar for code quality, testing, and observability.
• Drive CI/CD improvements and deployment safety.
• Foster ownership and continuous improvement across teams.
• Partner with Product, Operations, Pharmacy, and Finance to design solutions.
• Translate business requirements into scalable technical approaches.
• Lead initiatives from concept through rollout and support.
• Serve as a trusted technical advisor to stakeholders.
