Job summary

Koala Health, Inc. is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead technically across the engineering org. This hands-on role builds production systems while shaping architecture, standards, and AI adoption. Mentor engineers and drive delivery of scalable, reliable software.

Responsibilities include defining architectural standards, leading complex designs, and advancing AI-driven workflows. Remote-first environment with emphasis on cross-functional collaboration and engineering excellence.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required.
• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating complex systems.
• Expert-level Ruby on Rails with modern web app architecture and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Proven leadership in technical architecture, mentoring, and delivering reliable, observable, high‑performing systems.
• Strong product and business judgment with excellent communication.
• Deep expertise with modern AI development including LLMs and AI-powered tools.
• Authorization to work in the United States (visa sponsorship not available).

Responsibilities

• Define and evolve architectural standards across customer-facing and operational systems.
• Lead the design of complex software systems, integrations, workflows, and data models.
• Drive long-term technical strategy while balancing short-term priorities.
• Identify risks and opportunities and develop pragmatic plans.
• Lead architectural reviews and guide major technical decisions across teams.
• Establish patterns for reliability, maintainability, scalability, and developer productivity.
• Champion AI-assisted software development and define best practices for LLMs in coding, testing, and deployment.
• Design and build agentic systems that automate engineering and business processes.
