Job summary

BMO U.S. is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead end-to-end platform capabilities for enterprise AI, including governance, observability, and identity fabrics.

You will build and operate the core infrastructure that governs how AI runs, across AWS and Azure, with on-call ownership and strict regulatory alignment. This role emphasizes operability, latency, and correctness, mentoring teams while aligning with OSFI/OCC expectations and policy-as-code frameworks.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software/platform engineering experience at scale.
• Experience operating production infrastructure with on-call ownership.
• Regulated financial services exposure preferred.
• Depth in API gateways, policy-as-code, identity, observability, and auditing.

Responsibilities

• Own capabilities end to end: design, implement, test, ship, and operate production infrastructure.
• Engineer for operability and defensibility from day one with instrumentation, SLOs, latency budgets, and runtime evidence.
• Build APIs, SD'able interfaces, and integrations for domains, DevOps pipelines, and enterprise systems.
• Implement policy enforcement, guardrails, identity attestation, and audit as first-class concerns.
• Ensure runtime evidence connects AI activity to policy enforcement, identity, and lineage for model-risk reviews.
• Mentor and raise the bar: review designs and code and grow depth across the team.
• Partner with AI Developer Experience, AI Security, and AI SDLC teams.
