Job summary

Humana seeks a Principal AI Applied Engineer to define the long-term AI strategy and architecture for enterprise-scale AI-enabled products. You will be hands-on, shaping platform choices, governance, and model strategies while guiding multiple engineering teams.

You will prototype, build, and scale AI systems with a focus on reliability, privacy, and compliance in healthcare, balancing strategic leadership with practical coding and mentorship.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 12+ years of software engineering experience, including large-scale distributed systems.
• Proven track record designing, delivering, and operating production AI-enabled platforms at enterprise scale.
• Deep expertise in LLMs, AI platform design, RAG, agentic systems, orchestration frameworks, evaluation methodologies, and AI operations.
• Extensive experience designing cloud-native architectures and scalable, resilient systems.
• Ability to define technical direction influencing multiple teams beyond direct reporting.
• Experience establishing engineering standards adopted across teams.
• Strong understanding of AI operational challenges including reliability, latency, governance, and cost optimization.
• Expert-level proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript/JavaScript.
• Ability to prototype, review, and contribute code across stack.

Responsibilities

• Define long-term technical strategy, reference architecture, and technology roadmap for AI-enabled products.
• Establish architectural patterns and best practices for retrieval systems, LLM orchestration, and governance.
• Lead organization-wide technical decision-making on model strategy, platform investments, and shared infrastructure.
• Design scalable, reliable, secure, and cost-efficient architectures.
• Set engineering standards for evaluation, observability, and lifecycle management.
• Build prototypes and reference implementations to de-risk emerging technologies.
• Lead architecture reviews and provide technical guidance across teams.
• Mentor engineers and technical leaders through reviews and coaching.
• Develop roadmaps aligned with business strategy and objectives.
• Partner with executives to translate priorities into technical strategies and communicate opportunities/risks.
